Having a dog in Outbound gives you extra storage and a friend for your travels. But dogs can do much more than just that! By collecting resources and learning new tricks, you can significantly improve your dog’s abilities, making it easier to gather and process materials. This guide will cover all the dog tricks in Outbound and explain how to teach them to your furry companion.
How to Learn All Dog Tricks in Outbound
You can teach your dog tricks once you’ve built the Dog Research Station on your camper van. To get started, you’ll need the blueprint, which you can find by downloading it from a signal tower located in either the coastal or canyon regions.
Once you’ve got this, you can then craft it with the following materials:
- 2 Scrap Metal
- 3 Redwood
You’ll also need to build the Companion Training Station, which becomes available when you download the blueprint for the research station. Here’s what you’ll need to build it:
- 2 Durafiber
- 2 Natural Rubber
Okay, so now that I’ve unlocked both stations, I can start researching new tricks for my dog! Each station lets me teach different ones, which is awesome. The thing is, learning and then teaching a trick needs specific materials. It’s a good thing I don’t need these materials for much else in the main game, or I’d be scrambling!
All Dog Tricks & Upgrades in Outbound
Your companion can learn five different upgrades, including ways to increase their storage. Here’s a breakdown of each one, and what you need to research to unlock them:
- Pouch Upgrade I: An expanded pouch, so your buddy can carry extra supplies. (10 Red Minerals, 6 Cloth)
- Pouch Upgrade II: An even bigger pouch capable of carrying more supplies.
- Return to Vehicle: Teaches your dog a new command to return all of its stored items to the vehicle. (6 Sea Shells, 4 Redwood)
- Better Whistle: Allows directing your companion to positions or objects. When directed to an object, your companion will pick it up and put it in their pouch. (3 Beeswax, 2 Processed Rubber).
- Search Materials: With this command, you can train your dog to sniff and search for a specific resource. (8 Cactus Flower, 10 Red Minerals).
So, once I’ve figured out what upgrade I want for my pup, I go over to the Training Station and pick the training for it. It always costs materials, of course – from what I’ve seen, it’s always the same two types of materials as the research, but you need less of them, plus a handful of Dog Treats. It’s a pretty simple process!
To learn the Better Whistle trick, you’ll need 5 Dog Treats, 2 Beeswax, and 1 Processed Rubber.
You can increase your companion’s storage using the Sewing Table – the same one you use to make clothes and backpack upgrades for yourself.
Once I’ve taught my dog a trick, it’s super easy to use it in the game! I just press the RB button (on Xbox) or R1 (on PlayStation) to bring up the trick wheel, and then I can pick the trick I want him to do.
Best Dog Tricks and Upgrades in Outbound
The research station has a specific order for unlocking upgrades, but after you’ve researched them, it’s often beneficial to prioritize crafting certain upgrades over others.
I recommend prioritizing upgrades to your companion’s pouch, and teaching them the ‘Return to Vehicle’ and ‘Search Materials’ commands. These three things together will let your companion effectively gather resources for you while you work on other tasks, like using machines or collecting different materials inside your van. Once they’ve collected enough, they’ll automatically bring everything back to your van, ready for you to use.
