How to Rank Up in Dota 2 | Matchmaking Rating (MMR) Explained

Achieving the Immortal rank in Dota 2 is an exceptionally tough feat for any player, regardless of their skill level. This challenging milestone is reached by accumulating points within the game’s Matchmaking Rating (MMR) system, which assigns points as players climb through the ranks.

To rank up, players will have to participate in ranked matches, winning games and more.

All Dota 2 Ranks and Their MMR:

  • Herald: 1 – 769 MMR.
  • Guardian: 770- 1539 MMR.
  • Crusader: 1540 – 2309 MMR.
  • Archon: 2310 – 3079 MMR.
  • Legend: 3080 – 3849 MMR.
  • Ancient: 3850 – 4619 MMR.
  • Divine: 4620 – 5620 MMR.
  • Immortal: 5620+ MMR.

As you start venturing into ranked play for the first time, your Matchmaking Rating (MMR) will be determined based on several initial games you play. Once this calculation is complete, you’ll be assigned a rank and receive your inaugural medal.

No one, however, will start in Immortal. With each loss, you will lose MMR, potentially dropping in rank. However, those playing core roles in matches (carry, mid-lane) will receive more MMR per win than those playing support roles (off-lane, soft support, hard support).

All Ranks, excluding Immortal, are split up into five parts.

What is ranked?

As a gamer, I’d say, “In Dota 2 (and other games), Ranked Play mode is where we battle it out with fellow gamers, moving up a unique ranking system. Although the rank itself doesn’t bring any tangible rewards apart from in-game perks and bragging rights, top players still love to show off their high ranks to others.

For novice Dota 2 players, attempting a run towards the Immortal rank might seem overwhelmingly challenging due to the game’s significant skill difference, but with determination and effort, it remains achievable.
