Special Trades are a recurring element in Pokémon games, offering players a chance to obtain rare and hard-to-find Pokémon before they’re normally accessible in the game world.

In Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen, you can usually trade for Pokémon that you can also catch yourself in the game. However, some like Mr. Mime, Tangela, Farfetch’d, and Jynx are very rare. Other Pokémon, such as Nidoran and Nidorino/Nidorina, are normally available, but one of them will appear much less frequently depending on which game version you’re playing.

Trading Pokémon with a computer-controlled character offers the same advantages as trading with another player. The Pokémon you receive will level up faster, but its nickname will always stay the same – that’s just how the game works and can’t be changed.
Because the Nintendo Switch and upcoming Switch 2 versions of the game won’t link to Pokemon Home, trading Pokemon might be limited for many players – at least until they find someone to trade with locally. Nintendo has also stated that FireRed and LeafGreen won’t offer internet connectivity or online trading features.
