ARC Raiders Dev Explains How It’s Making the Game’s AI Robots Smarter

A developer from Embark Studios has shared more details about how they’re improving the AI of enemies, called ARC, in ARC Raiders. Players previously believed the ARC enemies could learn and adjust to their strategies on the fly, but the studio clarified that wasn’t the case. Now, a developer has explained the team’s process for manually making the enemies more intelligent.

Rumors that the AI robots in ARC Raiders learn and adapt during gameplay come from a real machine learning system Embark uses to control the movement of the ARC robots. This system trains the game’s AI enemies – including those with many limbs, like the Queen and Leaper – to move more effectively across each map. The machine learning is only used for movement, helping the robots walk, climb, and overcome obstacles. A common misunderstanding was that the system also allowed the robots to learn player behavior and patterns.

Embark Is Making ARC Enemies Smarter via TikToks and YouTube Videos

Embark Studios has previously clarified that their use of machine learning is limited to helping the ARC robots learn to move and navigate. In a recent GamesRadar interview, Martin Singh-Blom, the studio’s machine learning research lead, detailed how they actively improve the AI over time. He explained that they constantly work to make the flying drones more effective indoors, and they enjoy surprising players by finding ways for the drones to access previously safe areas. This approach followed an upgrade to the ARC’s vision system after a video showed a Leaper failing to pursue a Raider through a tunnel.

Singh-Blom emphasizes that the game isn’t learning from player data. Instead, the development team finds inspiration by watching popular videos of ARC Raiders on platforms like TikTok and YouTube. They then use these clips to guide updates, aiming to create surprising and enjoyable experiences for players. Contrary to some beliefs, Embark isn’t using AI to train the game; they’re manually making changes based on what they see resonating with the community in viral content.

The latest update to ARC Raiders, released on March 31st, introduced a dangerous new enemy called the Vaporizer. Currently only found on the Close Scrutiny map, the Vaporizer is a powerful foe. It’s built like a Rocketeer, but with a modern look and a far more aggressive attack – it fires lasers at players much like a flying version of the Queen enemy. To make matters worse, it also has a protective shield, similar to the Matriarch.

Okay, so it’s been a while since we got a really big, scary enemy in ARC Raiders – the Matriarch was the last one, way back in late last year. But good news! Embark just announced the Riven Tides update is coming out later this month, and it’s bringing a brand new massive ARC enemy to fight! They’re keeping the details about this robot under wraps for now, but they have started giving us little sneak peeks of the next map that’s dropping with the update. Everything points to it releasing this month, and a lot of people are guessing it’ll be on Tuesday, April 28th. I’m hyped!
