For any fan of Pokémon, a huge part of the fun is creating a team of unique monsters to overcome the game’s challenges. This is also reflected in the anime, which has showcased countless memorable and effective team combinations over the years. Ash Ketchum, the show’s former protagonist whose journey concluded three years ago, perfectly demonstrates this – he consistently built new teams to adapt to each new challenge he faced.

These teams all played a memorable role in the series and helped shape the main character’s growth into a top trainer. However, some of Ash’s Pokémon squads were more successful and popular than others. While he’s had many teams throughout his journey, only a select few stand out as the strongest, most well-rounded, and most fan-favorite.

Unova

Ash started as a somewhat arrogant and inexperienced trainer, but his travels through the first four regions helped him grow into a skilled one. Unfortunately, he seemed to lose much of that progress during his time in the Unova region, making several key errors. The show appeared to try and reset his character, reverting him to the boisterous and overconfident trainer he once was, and this was also reflected in the Pokémon he chose.

Ash’s team during the Unova season wasn’t very strong overall, with only a handful of Pokémon that really stood out. He usually focused on carefully training a small group, but this time the show gave him a much larger team. Because of this, most of his Pokémon didn’t get enough attention or time to improve, and several ended up being among his least effective partners, based on how often they lost battles.

Johto

Many Pokémon fans consider the Johto region to be one of the very best, thanks to its beautiful scenery, fascinating Pokémon, and memorable anime episodes. It holds a special place for millions who grew up watching Ash’s adventures, helping to establish him as a 90s and 2000s icon. However, despite all the positive memories, Johto is also known for being home to one of Ash’s weakest teams.

Just like in the Unova region, Ash didn’t fully develop his Pokémon during this period, which is noticeable because only one of them evolved. This left some of his Pokémon, such as Quilava, Heracross, and Totodile, feeling weaker than they could have been. Many fans believe this team would have been stronger if Ash had spent more time training and evolving his Pokémon.

Hoenn

I remember when the Pokémon anime took us to the Hoenn region – it didn’t always get the spotlight, but a lot of us who watched back then really loved it. He often depended too much on Pokémon like Charizard and Pikachu, leading to errors that a more experienced trainer would have prevented.

Orange Island

The Orange Islands storyline is often seen as a turning point for many Pokémon fans. While the season wasn’t poorly made, it didn’t feel as special or lasting as the very first series. A big reason for this is that Ash’s Pokémon team at the time wasn’t particularly fresh or exciting. He mostly used Pokémon fans already knew well – like Charizard, Bulbasaur, and Squirtle – which were great, but didn’t offer anything new.

He started as this poor, abandoned Chimchar who was mistreated by Paul, but he grew into a powerhouse with one of the best character arcs I’ve ever seen in the whole Pokémon world!

Alola

Throughout the many years of Pokémon, some character designs have sparked debate, but the animation changes during the Sun and Moon series are particularly well-known among anime fans. Regardless of whether people liked the new look, Ash’s Pokémon team during this time showed just how skilled and capable a trainer he truly is.

I was seriously blown away by how strong this team was right from the start! Even before evolving, Pokémon like Rowlett and Litten were total powerhouses. And get this – it’s the only time Ash ever controlled two Legendary Pokémon at once: the Mythical Melmetal and the Ultra Beast Naganadel! It’s funny looking back, because he usually doesn’t bother catching Legendaries, but this time it totally paid off – it helped him become the Alolan Champion, which was amazing to see!

Kalos

Many fans consider the Pokémon anime’s X and Y series to be one of its best. This era presented Ash with some of his toughest challenges yet. While the Kalos region was beautiful and inviting, it also featured incredibly skilled trainers, including two of his most formidable rivals. Ash had to build a team capable of overcoming these obstacles and solidifying his reputation as a top trainer.

During this period, Ash’s teammates weren’t just powerful Pokémon – they were close friends who shared his belief that kindness and teamwork were more important than brute strength. This supportive environment helped some of his strongest Pokémon, like his special Greninja who unlocked a completely new form, to evolve. Sadly, even this incredible team couldn’t overcome the storyline, and Ash lost his final battle against Alain – a result many fans still disagree with.

World Coronation Series (Galar)

Pokémon Journeys was a landmark season for the franchise, bringing Ash’s long adventure to a close and delivering a thrilling story. The season focused on the World Coronation Series, a global tournament for top trainers, where Ash had to put all his skills and experience to the test. He showcased his battle prowess with a remarkably well-rounded and powerful team.

Ash’s team wasn’t just a collection of powerful Pokémon; each member – from the playful Gengar to his longtime friend Pikachu – was chosen for their skills, how well they complemented each other in battle, and the strong connection they had with Ash. This team is famous not only for representing all the lessons Ash learned on his journey, but also for helping him achieve his lifelong goal of becoming a Pokémon master.
