As the highly-anticipated release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows approaches, reminiscent of an Assassin poised atop a stack of hay, Ubisoft has shared insights into the performance modes that PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro users can expect to access.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows Is The First Assassin’s Creed Title Developed And Designed For Current Generation Consoles
Indeed, a wide array of gameplay options can now be accessed by console gamers using the latest hardware, particularly the newly launched PlayStation 5 Pro.
The base PlayStation 5 version of Assassin’s Creed Shadows offers the following three modes:
- Fidelity Mode: 4K upscaled, 30fps with standard ray tracing
- Performance Mode: 4K upscaled, 60fps with selective ray tracing
- Balanced Mode: 4K upscaled, 40fps with standard ray tracing
For those intending to utilize the Balanced Mode, please be aware that it’s exclusively designed for gamers who have a TV or monitor supporting a refresh rate of 120/240Hz and equipped with HDMI 2.1 connectivity.
The PlayStation 5 Pro version of Assassin’s Creed Shadows offers three modes as well:
- Fidelity Mode: 4K upscaled, 30fps with extended ray tracing
- Performance Mode: 4K upscaled, 60fps with standard ray tracing
- Balanced Mode: 4K upscaled, 40fps with extended ray tracing
To set up Balanced Mode on the PlayStation 5 Pro, you’ll require the same conditions as the standard version of the console. Essentially, you’ll need a monitor or TV that supports refresh rates of either 120hz or 240hz to make this selection.
Ubisoft Clarifies That The PS5 Pro Is The Only Console With Extended Ray Tracing Support
In other words, reflective surfaces that use ray tracing should appear consistently across the entire game environment.
For many PS5 Pro users, deciding on their gaming experience means choosing between running games at a smooth 60 frames per second in Performance Mode, which doesn’t feature full ray tracing, or opting for Fidelity Mode at 30 frames per second, which includes extended ray tracing effects.
120/240Hz TVs or displays equipped with HDMI 2.1 technology, though innovative, are yet to be widely available on the market when this text is being written.
A shame, as it offers the best of both worlds at the same time.

Regardless of the chosen play mode, only those using PS5 can fully test their console’s capabilities by experiencing extended ray tracing while exploring, jumping, and assassinating in the Assassin’s Creed Shadows game world.
After multiple delays, Assassin’s Creed Shadows will finally release on March 20, 2025.
