2025 has been an active year for tactical shooter enthusiasts: ARMA Reforger from Bohemia Interactive hit its highest point, VOID officially unveiled the console version of Ready Or Not, and Escape From Tarkov finally revealed a release date following eight years in development.
Despite larger titles dominating the scene, it’s worth noting that smaller ones like Bellum, a tactical shooter in development since 2023 by Astarte Industries, are also making their mark. This project is spearheaded by modder and content creator Ryan “Karmakut” Yuan.
Following a shootout unveiling around the end of December, Bellum’s second developer log has now disclosed the fundamental mechanics of the game as well as its primary game mode. The video further explores squads equipped with machine guns, grenades, and additional gameplay aspects.
Bellum Main Game Mode

In the game Bellum, the primary playstyle is known as “Occupation,” where players from each team must strive for dominance over an area that gets chosen at random, aiming to exert control.
In this scenario, traditional military forces aim to secure control over the operational region, but local militia groups strive to thwart their efforts.
Every team possesses distinct resources they use to achieve their goals. While regular troops construct extensive battle stations to establish their presence strongly, unconventional forces operate primarily from more modest bases.
In this scenario, it’s like playing ‘whack-a-mole’ for military forces, much like the situation faced by the United States and its allies during the Vietnam War. This means that they constantly have to respond to or neutralize threats appearing in various locations, just as one would do with the popping moles in the game.
As a hardcore gamer, I’ve got to say, there are three ways to claim victory in this game mode:
1. Eliminate every last opponent on the opposing team.
2. Control the map by capturing key outposts.
3. Force the enemy to retreat from the entire operational area.
In addition to displaying the gameplay mode, Bellum also highlighted the functionality of machine gun teams within the game. A lone player can carry light machine guns such as the M240 or PK, however this leads to slower movement and prolonged reloading. Instead, players are advised to team up in pairs. One person takes charge of firing, while the other assists with ammunition reload and spotting duties.
Accessible Realism

In the strategic shooting genre, Bellum aspires to carve out its niche. The goal is to deliver gameplay that’s approachable, similar to Squad, while maintaining the level of teamwork synonymous with ARMA. As per the creators, each team will consist of 20 to 60 players.
The game is among the initial ones to visually portray the persistent conflict in the western Sahel region, albeit with a creative deviation. Bellum offers players the choice to assume roles as local militiamen, members of the U.S. Army’s 75th Ranger Regiment, or personnel from the Russian private military company, Wagner Group.
The individuals working on the development of Bellum bring expertise from various games such as ARMA, Squad, Ground Branch, and Ready Or Not. However, Astarte has not specified when Bellum will be released to the public.
