Best Blueprints to Get First in Outbound

At the beginning of Outbound, you’ll only have your camper van to travel with. But to progress, you’ll need to gather tools, upgrades, and equipment. Luckily, the map is filled with signal towers and landmarks that each offer a blueprint for something useful you can build and add to your van. The catch is, you usually have to choose between a few different options. So, what blueprints should you prioritize early in Outbound? Here’s a guide to help you decide.

Best Blueprints to Get First in Outbound

Based on my experience playing Outbound, here are the first six blueprints you should focus on collecting as soon as you can:

  • Axe
  • Sickle
  • Sewing Machine
  • Sawmill (obtained from the Fire Lookout)
  • Base Building Deck (obtained from the Treehut)
  • Bolt Press

This isn’t a strict list, but rather the order you’ll probably find these blueprints in, with the exception of the Sawmill and Base Building Deck plans. Those depend on where you decide to explore the map first. I’ll explain why I think they appear in this order below.

These are just my suggestions for which blueprints to unlock first – you can get them in any order you like! Signal towers will eventually reset, giving you another chance at a blueprint. My biggest tip is to prioritize tools and machines over furniture or decorations, as those will help you advance much faster.

Axe

You’ll need wood for almost all early crafting recipes. To get a lot of wood quickly, you’ll want to craft an axe. An axe lets you break down large logs, giving you much more wood than just collecting small pieces. Focus on gathering as much wood as possible early on – it will save you trouble later!

Just don’t burn through your stockpile of wood, refueling your camper van if you can avoid it.

Sickle

Okay, so you’ll quickly realize you need Fiber – it’s used to craft stuff like the Sewing Table and Spinning Wheel, and it’s vital for upgrades, especially getting a bigger backpack. Just like with wood, it’s tough going at first. Without the Sickle, you can only pick Fiber from those tiny bushes, and you only get one Fiber at a time. But once you unlock the Sickle, things get way better! You can harvest those bigger bushes and get three Fiber with each harvest, which is a huge time saver.

The Backpack Upgrade 1, crafted at the Sewing Table, is incredibly helpful when you’re first starting the game. To get the materials quickly, prioritize getting the blueprint for the Sickle, as it will speed up fiber harvesting – and you’ll need fiber for both the Sewing Table and the backpack itself.

Sewing Table

Okay, so you can’t make a Sewing Table right away, but trust me, it’s a total game-changer. It lets you craft Backpack Upgrades, which are awesome because they let you carry way more stuff without getting slowed down. But that’s not all – you can also upgrade your clothes and pants at the Sewing Table. Doing that actually boosts your max health and stamina, making it way easier to run around and explore without getting exhausted. Seriously, prioritize getting this unlocked!

In Outbound, health isn’t a major worry, but being able to boost your stamina and carry more items is a big help when you’re first starting out.

Sawmill

As a new player in Outbound, this is likely the very first blueprint you’ll find for a refining machine! You unlock it by heading to the Fire Lookout tower and finding three specific items – those are what you need to download the blueprint. It’s a pretty exciting moment when it finally unlocks!

The Sawmill lets you create planks from wooden logs. You’ll mainly need these planks to repair bridges – which opens up new areas on the map – and to expand the top of your camper van. Getting the Sawmill built and gathering wood should be a high priority, as you won’t be able to progress much further without it.

Base Building Deck

You can find the Base Building Deck at the Treehut in the northern part of the starting area. To get there, you’ll first need to fix the bridge near the Fire Lookout. This should be your second stop, as it gives you the blueprint to add a second story to your camper van.

Starting out, your camper van won’t have much room, making it difficult to build everything you want. The Base Building Deck solves this by giving you a lot more space to create and customize.

Bolt Press

Once you’ve collected the other five blueprints, you’ll likely find your camper van’s engine is starting to strain, especially when trying to reach places like the Windmill. The Bolt Press is a useful tool because it transforms Metal Scraps into Bolts, which are essential for upgrading your van. These upgrades boost your engine power, letting you tackle steeper hills and carry more supplies without draining your fuel or battery as quickly.

While you’ll eventually need other materials to fully upgrade your camper van, bolts are all you need to complete the initial upgrades for every system.
