So, you thought your wallet was safe, did you? Well, buckle up, because it turns out that MetaMask users are now the target of a brand-new phishing scam that promises to “improve security” while simultaneously stealing your seed phrase. Because who wouldn’t want to enhance their security by handing over their wallet key to a stranger? 🤷♂️
- This phishing campaign cleverly masquerades as a legitimate 2FA verification process-because nothing says “trust me” like a scam artist in a virtual disguise.
- Oh, and just in case you’ve been living under a rock, this delightful little scheme follows closely on the heels of a wallet exploit and the Trust Wallet Chrome extension debacle. Cheers to timing! 🥂
According to the folks at SlowMist-who apparently have nothing better to do than keep an eye on these scams-MetaMask users have been receiving emails that scream urgency. The kind of urgency that makes you feel like you’re late for a date with your bank account. The emails are decked out in MetaMask branding, so they look almost convincing at first glance. (See below for some real artistry.)

And if that wasn’t enough to elevate your blood pressure, these emails come complete with a countdown timer. Yes, because nothing says “this is totally legit” like a ticking clock pressuring you to click something you shouldn’t. 😬
Once you click the “Enable 2FA Now” button-which I can only assume is a euphemism for “welcome to the world of regret”-you’ll be whisked away to a beautifully crafted fake page. But don’t let the aesthetics fool you; it’s all a ploy to get you to enter your mnemonic phrase. Spoiler alert: they’ll use that to raid your wallet faster than you can say “crypto crash.” (See below for more tragic art.)

Now, if you’re a bit more observant than the average user, you might notice a few red flags waving in the breeze. For instance, phishing emails often feature typos or design flaws that could make even a kindergarten art project look professional. In this case, the URL was spelled “mertamask”-because what’s a little misplaced letter among friends? And let’s not forget those emails that come from random accounts or public domains like Gmail. Nothing screams “trustworthy” like a free email service! (See below for the pièce de résistance.)

Here’s a golden nugget of wisdom: MetaMask does NOT send unsolicited emails asking for account verification or security updates. If you receive one, congratulations! You’ve just won a ticket to the scam of the century. 🎉
Recent Phishing Campaigns Targeting Crypto Users
Just last week, cybersecurity researcher Vladimir S. flagged a similar campaign promoting a fake MetaMask app update. Apparently, it’s all connected to another wallet-draining exploit that’s making the rounds. How charming!
On-chain sleuth ZachXBT reported that victims lost less than $2,000 per wallet in this latest fiasco, which only serves to highlight how widespread the problem is across several EVM-compatible networks. But hey, at least it’s not too connected, right? 😅
And let’s not forget about the Trust Wallet hack that happened on Christmas Day, where losses soared to around $7 million-just in time for the holiday cheer! 🎄
The attacker had a field day, gaining access to the wallet’s browser extension source code and uploading a malicious version to the Chrome Web Store. Trust Wallet has promised to compensate affected users, probably with coupons for their next wallet disaster.
In unrelated news, Cardano users were also put on alert about a different ongoing attack involving a fraudulent Eternl Desktop application. Talk about a busy couple of weeks for scammers!
Despite all this chaos, a recent Scam Sniffer report revealed that total losses from crypto phishing campaigns dropped nearly 88% in 2025 from the previous year. Which only goes to show that even scams have their off days! 😂
