As a researcher who has delved deep into the world of cryptocurrencies and artificial intelligence, I find myself constantly amazed by the rapid pace at which these technologies are evolving – and sometimes, not so pleasantly surprised by their misuse. The recent warning issued by Binance founder Changpeng ‘CZ’ Zhao about the rising threat of AI-generated deepfake videos is a stark reminder of this duality.
Changpeng ‘CZ’ Zhao, founder of Binance, has cautioned the crypto community about an increasing danger: deepfake videos powered by AI that are being shared online. Subsequently, he took to social media to warn his followers about false videos claiming to show him endorsing various cryptocurrencies.
Binance Founder Changpeng ‘CZ’ Zhao Issues Major AI Warning
In a recent post on social media platform X, Binance founder Changpeng ‘CZ’ Zhao cautioned the community about deep fake videos produced by AI that falsely portray him endorsing coins he doesn’t own. He clarified that these videos are misleading and emphasized that he is unaware of the coins being marketed in them. The Binance founder advised his followers to stay vigilant against impersonation scams, warning they might encounter such deep fake videos on other social media platforms as well.
The warning issued by the founder of Binance is a reaction to growing apprehension within the cryptocurrency community regarding the use of artificial intelligence to produce deceptive content. These deceptive videos, known as deepfakes, utilize artificial intelligence to generate videos of individuals performing or speaking actions they never actually did. As AI tools are increasingly used to create convincing forgeries, instances of such fraud are becoming more prevalent.
One X user humorously warned others to be cautious during Binance Blockchain Week (BBW), joking that founders may take photos with Zhao and later claim,
“Great to meet @cz_binance, and discussed the potential of XYZ project.”
Broader Issue of AI-Driven Scams
AI-generated deepfakes pose a significant threat not only to Binance founder Changpeng ‘CZ’ Zhao, but also to the entire cryptocurrency industry. Fraudsters are now utilizing Artificial Intelligence technology to create deceptive content that misleads investors and tarnishes the reputation of market leaders.
More recently, Brad Garlinghouse, the head of Ripple, pointed out a surge in deepfake frauds. He illustrated this concern by citing misleading videos depicting him endorsing sham goods.
Dishonest individuals have manipulated AI technology to replay old videos in an attempt to swindle people. Additionally, Ripple has issued several alerts advising users to remain cautious and avoid fraudulent accounts pretending to be the company.
High-Profile Deepfake Incidents Continue
The danger posed by artificial intelligence, particularly deepfake scams, is not exclusive to the crypto world. Notable figures like Taylor Swift and Donald Trump have fallen victim to AI-generated videos. Lately, Taylor Swift has voiced her apprehension about the application of AI deepfakes following the misuse of her images to back certain political figures. This issue has grown more severe with the continuous advancements in artificial intelligence technology.
In another instance, an unauthorized party took control of an Indian Supreme Court’s YouTube channel to advertise a bogus cryptocurrency trading platform. These cyber crooks uploaded deceptive videos onto the channel in order to persuade viewers to invest in a sham Ripple and XRP investment scheme. Unfortunately, YouTube shut down the account, but this incident underscores the growing prevalence of artificial intelligence-driven fraudulent activities.
In spite of the hurdles presented by AI-related frauds, Binance’s founder Changpeng ‘CZ’ Zhao is gearing up to make a comeback in the public eye. Following a four-month imprisonment, Zhao will participate at the Binance Blockchain Week in Dubai on October 30-31. This event will be his first significant public engagement since his legal dispute with the U.S. Department of Justice.
