Blade & Soul NEO: The Ultimate Remaster You Can’t Miss!

NCSoft is making a genuine effort with the “remaster” concept by introducing Blade & Soul NEO, a free-to-play version that significantly overhauls nearly every element while retaining the distinctive kung fu action-based MMORPG playstyle of the original game. While Blade & Soul wasn’t visually exceptional in 2012 MMORPG terms, this remaster has pushed the visuals of the Wuxia-themed Korean MMO to levels that rival some of today’s most popular genre titles. Apart from the noticeable graphical upgrade, Blade & Soul NEO offers enhanced gameplay features, such as a revamped experience for new players, improved traversal, and several new systems designed to enrich the customization options within the game.

As a die-hard fan, I was fortunate enough to get an exclusive sneak peek at Blade & Soul NEO, lasting approximately 20 minutes and showcasing its major enhancements. Unlike a brand-new sequel, this remaster should feel right at home for fans of the original game. You won’t find any new character classes or races, and the core combat system remains largely unaltered. However, for seasoned gamers who enjoy kung fu MMOs, the updated itemization should still feel like a comfortable fit. For those just starting their martial arts adventure, an improved onboarding experience is designed to make navigating this exciting new world a breeze!

Blade & Soul NEO Is a Massive Visual Improvement

Undeniably, the main attraction in this remaster is the significantly enhanced visuals of Blade & Soul NEO. A side-by-side comparison in the provided footage vividly showcased the effort NCSoft invested to modernize the ten-year-old MMORPG. The lighting and shading have undergone a significant transformation, with improved shadows providing depth to the geometry and advanced lighting highlighting the game’s vivid color schemes. In essence, it appears more vibrant, colorful, and maintains its visual appeal when compared to contemporary graphics standards. Furthermore, improvements in the geometry of stationary objects and the addition of grass and foliage have breathed life into areas that were previously just green floor textures.

I’ve been utterly amazed by the transformations in the game environments! Take, for instance, a once desolate coastline that’s now transformed into an enchanting scene with shipwrecks smoldering in the waters beneath a towering cliff casting a long, dramatic shadow over the sandy beach. Another striking example is the city in the game, where a few buildings and an empty courtyard have been replaced by a bustling metropolis, glowing with string lights, and God rays piercing through tree canopies, revealing distant landscapes in finer detail. As for video game remasters go, Blade & Soul NEO is nothing short of remarkable!

Blade & Soul NEO Retains its Iconic Action Combat System

In the reveal of Blade & Soul NEO, we got a glimpse of the combat system, which retains the same thrilling dynamics as its predecessor. The combat system seems like a blend of traditional fighting game mechanics and tab-target MMORPG elements, with players strategically timing their cooldowns for combo abilities. Moreover, enhanced graphics and animations elevate the already spectacular fight scenes in Blade & Soul. A brief 3v3 faction PVP battle showcased intense action, but the free-for-all PVP was even more chaotic. Players were seen scrambling to acquire a Scavenger’s Treasure Chest, employing crowd control abilities against each other in a bid to secure the sought-after loot.

The video showcased the updated Tomb of the Exiles dungeon, now boasting an impressive appearance with improved lighting and clever use of its vertical layout that accentuates the game’s flexible movement mechanics. We got a sneak peek at the Infernal Lord boss battle too, which commenced spectacularly through a captivating cutscene before the team found themselves skillfully evading his diverse set of attacks. Players may find themselves knocked off their feet by the boss’s frontal strikes, area-of-effect knockdowns, fire breath, and powerful grab attack, but they can take solace in the fact that they’ll look stylish while doing so.

Blade & Soul NEO’s Customization and Fashion Is as Deep as Ever

As a gamer, I can’t help but be impressed by the incredible character customization in Blade & Soul NEO. Just like its predecessor, it offers a slider-based system that lets me tweak every detail of my character, from grotesque to comical to stunningly beautiful. Unlike other games that restrict these adjustments to maintain some visual uniformity among players, Blade & Soul NEO allows for extreme modifications. Even the Lyn race, with its animalistic features, has a wide range of options – you can resize and recolor tails and ears for a truly unique look. The level of detail in this customization system is so fine that fashion enthusiasts in the virtual world might find themselves spending hours perfecting their characters!

Once again, fashion plays a significant role in MMORPGs, and Blade & Soul NEO presented an array of fashion choices blending both contemporary and mythical styles. From martial arts uniforms to dresses adorned with bows and ribbons, formal wear, and a unique armor set featuring fireball-replaced joints, there’s a wide range of cosmetic options to cater to every player’s preference. For those who wish to reflect their character’s class fantasy through clothing, various choices were showcased to help embody their fighting style.

Blade & Soul NEO Is Introducing All-New Systems

Blade & Soul NEO introduces both visual upgrades and system changes. One of the most striking modifications is the introduction of infinite windwalking, which means players no longer have to worry about a stamina meter restricting their movements. Instead, they can windwalk indefinitely. We saw players gliding through the air for remarkable distances from various viewpoints, while at other times they gracefully traversed vast water bodies. The game’s innovative freeform wall-climbing feature sets Blade & Soul NEO apart by offering mobility that is relatively uncommon in MMORPGs.

In the game, you’ll find fresh aspects associated with its equipment mechanisms. The Weapon Core system allows players to insert Soulstones into their weapons, enhancing their attributes and granting exclusive Soul Power abilities during battles. For instance, the Infernal Lord Soulstone lets players mimic the fire breath attack of the boss. Moreover, the Mantra system introduces an additional layer to equipment customization. By embedding a mix of three color-coded Mantras into your gear, you can trigger random effects from the pool of that specific combination. Players aiming to prioritize certain stats or gameplay styles can focus on specific combinations, and the interface conveniently displays each potential outcome.

A fresh Skill Manual is coming too, offering players the freedom to tailor their skills extensively, even changing their fundamental functions. For instance, instead of the Blade Master’s Take Flight ability propelling enemies into the air to stun them, in Rising Dragon Isle, this skill would inflict additional damage on already-stunned opponents, creating a nearly opposite effect. It’ll be intriguing to observe the unique differences between any two players from the same class in Blade & Soul NEO due to this system.

Thus far, it appears that Blade & Soul NEO embodies all the essential qualities of a well-executed MMORPG remaster. It maintains its original essence, yet enhances graphics, smoothens movement mechanics, and infuses excitement through new features. This combination should resonate with long-time fans while potentially attracting some fresh players as well.
