Action anime series like Bleach often have large casts and diverse fighting techniques, which means not every character gets the chance to fully showcase their abilities. Even shorter series, such as Demon Slayer, have limited time to develop each character’s weapons or special powers, and this is especially true for Bleach. As a result, many of the cool sword releases and powerful transformations that fans anticipate don’t get as much screen time as they’d like.
While a few Bankai techniques—like Ichigo’s Tensa Zangetsu, Byakuya’s Senbonzakura Kageyoshi, and Renji’s Hihio/So’o Zabimaru—get the attention they deserve, many others are used only once to add excitement to a fight or save a character from defeat. Even more disappointingly, some Bankai are reduced to being tools used (and lost) in battles against powerful enemies like the Espadas and Sternritter. For these Bankai, any screen time is a welcome change, as some haven’t been shown at all. Certain weapons and abilities are simply too impressive to be used just once in the long-running story of Bleach.
Tekken Tachikaze Failed to Finish Off Sternritter S
Wielder: Kensei Muguruma
During the battle in the fake Karakura Town, the most powerful members of the Visored performed reasonably well against the Espadas. However, they struggled more when they faced the Sternritter two years later. For instance, former Captain Kensei Muguruma couldn’t fully utilize his Bankai against Sternritter S, Mask de Masculine.
Kensei initially fought with intensity, using his Tekken Tachikaze against Mask, but he became careless afterward and didn’t use his bankai again. While he might not have been strong enough to defeat the Schutzstaffel on his own, Kensei and the other Visored could have distracted powerful Quincies like Askin and Gerard, allowing the main heroes of Bleach to deliver the final attacks.
Kinshara Butodan Didn’t Even Finish its Musical Performance
Wielder: Rojuro Otoribashi
In Bleach, many Soul Reapers make careless mistakes or underestimate their opponents, like the Espadas and Sternritter. Rojuro Otoribashi is a prime example. He sees himself as a heavy metal-loving artist, reflected in his dramatic Bankai, Kinshara Butodan, but ultimately, he’s not a very effective fighter.
Rojuro was slow to unleash his Bankai during the Thousand-Year Blood War, and when he did, Mask de Masculine easily countered it. Mask blocked the Bankai’s sound-based attack by deafening himself, then defeated Rojuro with a quick strike to the chest. It was frustrating for fans that Rojuro didn’t get another chance to showcase the full potential of his Kinshara Butodan and contribute more to the final battle.
Ryumon Hozukimaru Got Too Little Screen Time on Purpose
Wielder: Ikkaku Madarame
In the world of Bleach, a handful of characters who weren’t Captains managed to achieve the incredible power of Bankai. Ikkaku Madarame, the 3rd seat of Squad 11, was one of them. He stunned fans during the Arrancar arc when he unleashed Ryumon Hozukimaru against Edrad Leones, ultimately winning a very close battle.
You know, it’s really frustrating that we didn’t get to see Ryumon Hozukimaru used much after its initial appearance! It all comes down to Ikkaku’s tendency to hold back, something he picked up from Kenpachi. He was so fixated on taking on tough opponents like Poww and the Sternritter using only his Shikai, and even Tetsuzaemon Iba called him out on it! Honestly, it’s a shame, because his Bankai is awesome, but he barely ever used it, which is a real letdown for fans like me.
Hakka No Togame Was Needed Against More Than One Sternritter
Wielder: Rukia Kuchiki
Rukia Kuchiki, similar to her friend Renji Abarai, improved her abilities several times to keep up with Ichigo, including learning to use Bankai. Renji used his Bankai frequently against powerful opponents like Byakuya, Ilfort, Szayelaporro, and Mask, and even managed to further develop it after training with Oetsu Nimaiya. It’s a pity Rukia didn’t use her Bankai as often.
It’s disappointing that Rukia didn’t get a more significant power boost. Fans were expecting a big reveal of her abilities and a full demonstration of her zanpakuto, Sode no Shirayuki, especially compared to Renji. While she successfully defeated Äs Nödt using her icy release, Hakka no Togame, Rukia seemed hesitant to use her bankai again. She might have been worried about injuring herself without Byakuya present, but she really should have at least attempted it one more time.
Minazuki Was Used in Training, Then Lost Forever
Wielder: Retsu/Yachiru Unohana
Captain Retsu Unohana was first shown as a skilled healer whose powerful sword, Shikai, could both move people around and mend their injuries. Her gentle and compassionate personality seemed to fit this role perfectly, leading fans to believe her ultimate ability, the Bankai, would offer even greater healing powers.
Instead of a typical weapon, Bleach fans saw a terrifying, viscous substance capable of seriously harming even powerful fighters like Kenpachi Zaraki, as demonstrated when Unohana revealed her true form as Yachiru. It’s unfortunate that Minazuki was only used for Kenpachi’s training and never deployed against the Sternritter. Had Minazuki been used sooner and more frequently, the Soul Society could have suffered fewer losses.
Nozarashi’s Unnamed Bankai Appeared at the Last Minute in the Blood War
Wielder: Kenpachi Zaraki
Kenpachi Zaraki was already incredibly strong even without unlocking the full power of his sword, Shikai, or Bankai. However, the massive threat from the Quincy empire pushed him to train relentlessly with Unohana. This training allowed him to finally learn the name of his sword, Nozarashi, and achieve Shikai, which was enough to defeat Sternritter V, Gremmy Thoumeaux. But when facing Sternritter M, Gerard Valkyrie, even Shikai wasn’t powerful enough.

High Score: 0 —
I watched as Kenpachi was truly pushed to his breaking point – further than I’d ever seen him challenged by opponents like Nnoitora, Yammy, or even Gremmy. It was then he finally revealed his Bankai, a truly wild and powerful form. But surprisingly, we only got to see it once. What made Kenpachi so compelling was his constant growth, so it was a bit disappointing that his ultimate form didn’t get much time to shine.
Kyoka Suigetsu’s Bankai Could Have Made Things Easier Against the Schutzstaffel
Wielder: Sosuke Aizen
Some Bankai techniques in Bleach were barely shown, so fans have been eager for more details. This is especially true for Sosuke Aizen, a major villain, whose Bankai remains a mystery. This has led to interesting fan theories, with some suggesting Aizen doesn’t actually have a Bankai, and instead uses the illusions of his Zanpakuto, Kyoka Suigetsu, to make others think he does.
Aizen never felt the need to reveal his bankai, even if he had one. After obtaining the Hogyoku, he thought he no longer needed his zanpakuto’s full power. Later, when fighting Yhwach, even just using the initial release (shikai) was almost enough. Many Bleach fans were likely hoping to see his bankai against Yhwach, and were disappointed that he never unleashed it.
Sakashima Yokoshima Happofusagari Had the Power to Trounce the Sternritter
Wielder: Shinji Hirako
Some bankai that rely on deception or trickery are actually more powerful than those focused on raw strength. This is because they can manipulate enemies into fighting each other, like Captain Shinji Hirako’s bankai. Hirako’s bankai is so dangerous – and was even outlawed – that it warps the perception of anyone caught in its effect, causing them to attack their allies. Notably, Shinji himself is unaffected by its powers.
Shinji easily defeated a group of soldiers using his skills, but when he fought the Sternritter E, Bambietta Basterbine, he didn’t fully utilize the power of his Zanpakuto. He could have tricked Bambietta and her allies into fighting each other – Bambietta and Giselle were powerful enough to take on the rest of the team – but he didn’t even consider this strategy, despite the serious danger he was in.
Sogyo no Kotowari’s Bankai is Massive Potential Left on the Table
Wielder: Jushiro Ukitake
Ichigo, the main character, is incredibly resilient due to his unique inner power and strong support network. In contrast, Captain Ukitake relied on a special ability granted by Mimihagi, a powerful entity connected to the Soul King, to protect him. Sadly, this meant Ukitake’s true strength wasn’t his own Bankai, but rather strategically using Mimihagi to safeguard the Soul King when needed.
Ukitake apparently possessed a powerful bankai ability, but he never used it during the series, and it was never shown. Sadly, he passed away while protecting the Soul King, who had saved his life long ago, meaning his bankai’s full potential will remain unknown. Considering how impressive his shikai ability was, it’s disappointing we never got to see his bankai.
Koko Gonryo Rikyu Was Primarily Seen in Driscoll Berci’s Villainous Hands
Wielder: Chojiro Sasakibe
I only ever witnessed this bankai being used once, during a flashback, and it was wielded by Sternritter O Driscoll Berci. Lieutenant Chojiro Sasakibe, from the 1st squad, was really proud of his bankai – he described it as like a thunderstorm, and Yamamoto seemed to admire it too. However, that pride didn’t really show up in actual battles; it didn’t seem to give him a significant advantage.
During the battle at Sokyoku Hill, Chojiro surprisingly used his relatively weak Shikai against Ichigo, fighting in place of his Captain. When the Sternritter attacked, he only showed his Bankai for a moment before Driscoll Berci stole it with his medallion. Later, Yamamoto fought Driscoll and was angered to see a weakened version of the stolen Bankai being used. Because of these events, fans of Bleach will likely never see the full potential of this Bankai demonstrated in a proper fight.
