As a die-hard Borderlands fan who has spent countless hours looting, shooting, and laughing my way through the chaotic universe of Pandora, I can confidently say that the announcement of Borderlands 4 at Gamescom was like finding a golden Vault Key on my birthday! Seven long years have passed since the release of Borderlands 3, and while we’ve had our fair share of loot-filled adventures elsewhere, nothing quite compares to the madcap mayhem of the Borderlands series.

The highly-anticipated Borderlands 4, the latest installment in Gearbox Software’s popular looter-shooter series, was unveiled with great fanfare during Gamescom Opening Night Live. Given the phenomenal sales of previous Borderlands games, it was more a question of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’ we would see Borderlands 4. However, since there were seven years between the release of Borderlands 2 and 3, fans had been uncertain as to when they could look forward to playing this new game.

Lately, it was hinted by Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford that a new Borderlands game revelation might happen quite soon. However, many were taken aback when this game was actually announced at Gamescom, making its unveiling a major shocking moment for the event.

As a devoted fan, I couldn’t contain my excitement when Gearbox Software and 2K Games unveiled the stunning CG trailer for Borderlands 4! The trailer showcased a fiery phoenix soaring across the sky, over a familiar landscape that seemed to be Pandora, only this time it was tearing through some strange terrain. This tumultuous event sent a mask of a series-favorite Psycho bandit flying onto an unidentified planet’s surface. A robotic arm swooped in to retrieve the mask, which was quickly replaced by the Borderlands 4 logo, confirming the platforms for this highly anticipated game. The trailer confirmed that Borderlands 4 will be available on PC (via both Steam and the Epic Games Store), PS5, and Xbox Series X, making it the first true next-gen chapter in the beloved series, set to launch in 2025!

Borderlands 4 Trailer

At this point, not much more is known about Borderlands 4, but it’s been confirmed that it will follow suit with its predecessors as a looter-shooter game. In Borderlands 4, players will once again assume the role of a Vault Hunter and engage in battles against vast enemy armies while gathering numerous treasures and loot, similar to previous games. Essentially, Borderlands fans can anticipate an experience similar to past entries. However, there’s one significant way that Borderlands 4 is distinguishing itself from the rest of the series: a notable departure in its gameplay mechanics.

For the most part, the Borderlands series has predominantly revolved around the world of Pandora. However, Borderlands 4 marks a shift in scenery as the upcoming game is set on an entirely new planet. The name of this new planet and its differences compared to Pandora are details yet to be revealed.

Fans of the Borderlands franchise are undoubtedly thrilled by the news of Borderlands 4, especially considering its timing, as the Borderlands film has fallen flat at the box office, often criticized as one of the worst video game movie adaptations ever made. The announcement of Borderlands 4 should help fans divert their attention from the movie adaptation and instead concentrate on the game series.
