BREAKING: The Token That Might Just Save the Universe (or Not!)

In a revelation that could only be described as mildly interesting, Joseph Lubin, the grand poobah of Consensys, has announced that the Ethereum layer-2 network LINEA is poised to launch a token before the much-anticipated MetaMask. Yes, you heard that right! 🎉

His comments, which were delivered with all the urgency of a sloth on a Sunday stroll, came during a recent update on X, where he responded to the burning questions of the universe regarding token plans for Consensys’ various products. Spoiler alert: it’s not as thrilling as it sounds.

Consensys Founder Confirms LINEA Token Plans

Lubin, in his infinite wisdom, explained that the company is not rushing into token launches. Instead, they are taking a structured approach that prioritizes turning products into decentralized protocols first. Because who doesn’t love a good protocolization? 🤔

He dubbed this strategy “protocolization,” which sounds like a fancy term for “let’s take our sweet time.” Apparently, token releases will follow once a project matures and becomes more community-driven. So, basically, when pigs fly.

We have a short and medium term plan/strategy. It involves protocolization of our current products and other initiatives. And Web3 protocols need tokens. First out of the gate will be LINEA. Soon. More to come on this. And they will all be synergistic with one another.

LINEA is expected to be the first in line, operated by the Linea Association, which sounds like a secret society of blockchain enthusiasts. This Ethereum scaling solution aims to improve transaction efficiency and reduce costs. Because who doesn’t want to save a few bucks while navigating the wild west of crypto?

L2Beat data shows that it is among the top 10 Ethereum layer-2 solutions, with around $370 million secured on the network. That’s a lot of digital coins, folks!

The team initially intended to launch a token by the end of Q1 2025, but alas, they missed that window. Lubin’s latest comments suggest that the release is still on the table and may be coming soon. Or not. Who knows? 🤷‍♂️

He also confirmed that several Consensys products will likely issue tokens over time. However, he emphasized that each token will have a clear function within a broader Web3 framework, supporting governance, incentives, and interoperability across decentralized applications. Sounds complicated, right?

MetaMask Token Not Coming Yet?

While excitement continues to build around the idea of a MetaMask token, Lubin avoided making any promises. Because why commit to something when you can keep everyone guessing? 😏

Considering Lubin’s response, a MetaMask token could happen only if the wallet evolves into a more protocol-like structure. This indicates that the project isn’t yet ready for such a move. So, hold your horses, folks!

Over the past months, speculation about a MetaMask token has been persistent, despite multiple warnings from the team. In March, MetaMask issued a notice to alert users about scams involving fake token promotions. Because nothing says “trustworthy” like a scam alert!

Please be aware that projects indicating trading, or pre-market trading, of a MetaMask token are unaffiliated with Consensys.

There is currently no MetaMask token.

The moves are unsurprising considering MetaMask remains one of the most widely used Ethereum wallets, acting as a gateway between users and decentralized apps. The platform has more than 30 million users as of 2024. That’s a lot of wallets!

However, Lubin’s comment clarified that any potential token linked to the wallet would be part of a broader, carefully planned rollout. So, stay tuned for more thrilling updates that may or may not happen!
