In today’s gaming landscape, it takes courage to introduce a new extraction shooter game. Previous attempts have often failed to meet the mark, while those that have survived have undeniably ruled the genre – and I must say, you, Escape from Tarkov, are certainly one of them.
Even though Bungie is venturing into the genre for the first time with Marathon, an upcoming sci-fi themed extraction shooter, it’s intriguing to know why they are attempting to make a hit in this competitive genre where others have fallen short. In a recent interview, Jake Lucky of Gaming World Media spoke with Joe Ziegler, the game’s director, about their reasons for taking on this challenge.
‘Super Exciting and Super Unique’
The model for extracting shooters is gaining popularity and may soon be a common feature across various development studios, as numerous creators have shown interest. Notably, Bungie, one of the larger studios, is developing an extraction shooter, marking their entry into this genre with Marathon, a modernized revival of a game from the 90s.
Here’s the full interview:
After a Marathon testing session, Jake Lucky spoke with Joe Ziegler and enquired: “What led your team to create an extraction shooter, given the uncertain response at most from the market regarding new games within this genre?
As a gamer, I find extraction shooters to be an exceptional niche within gaming where the choices are abundant and each one carries weight in a bizarrely compelling way. The gameplay immerses me in these intense survival stories that unfold dynamically as I make every decision, whether it’s a source of exhilaration or a moment of remorse.
As an enthusiast, I can’t help but feel thrilled about the concept that around the next bend lies either a dazzling new light or a treacherous abyss. The exhilarating challenge of navigating through a perilous landscape to survive is absolutely captivating and truly one-of-a-kind. I believe this is exactly why the creation of an extraction shooter game was such an ideal choice for us.
The studio is drawn towards creating thrilling First-Person Shooter (FPS) games that offer both exhilarating and deeply emotional experiences. Our aim was to elevate this concept even further, much like Marathon does.
The team outlined their intention for Marathon: to design a social extraction experience that’s enjoyable, user-friendly, and fun. They aren’t striving to resemble Escape from Tarkov in any way, nor does it aim to be as challenging or harsh as the decade-old Battlestate Games extraction shooter.
Experience Marathon as a thrilling journey shared with companions, since the main gameplay is currently designed exclusively for team play. Bungie aims to provide a stimulating adventure that consistently offers triumph rather than disheartening defeats after just an hour in a solo raid, which is often the case in Escape from Tarkov.
