As an ardent fan, I’ve got to say, extract shooters are undeniably challenging. It’s one of the major hurdles hindering broader acceptance of the genre – who’d want to engage with a game that can turn sour in just a blink of an eye, ruining what could have been an enjoyable hour-long experience otherwise?
Bungie designed Marathon as a ‘social gathering adventure’, emphasizing a unified, cooperative atmosphere within the game. This approach is unique in the extraction genre, as seen in a conversation between Bungie’s Joe Ziegler and Jake Lucky from Gaming World Media.
‘We’re Not Trying to Fragment You’
Marathon is venturing into the extraction genre with a daring concept: a game that’s enjoyable not just to win, but also fun to play and even lose at. It maintains all the features of an extraction shooter, but it has been designed since its inception to be played cooperatively with friends.

Keeping this thought in mind, the team assures us that ‘nearly every map will offer a method for bypassing other players’. However, it’s important to note that the main gameplay mechanic will revolve around the ‘thrill’ of encountering someone else unexpectedly and engaging in an exciting battle.
Joe Ziegler, the Game Director on Marathon, explained to GWM’s Jake Lucky:
The primary focus for us was enhancing Marathon to provide a more socially interactive experience. There’s immense worth in collaborating with others, whether they are familiar faces or new acquaintances you desire to team up with. The goal is to foster an atmosphere where everyone feels involved in crafting this shared adventure, rather than constantly separating you.
He provided an illustration using the common structure of battle royale games as a reference. He explained that when you’re playing in a trio within these games and one member gets eliminated, they are forced to watch from the sidelines, having minimal enjoyment from their gameplay. In contrast, characters in Marathon can be revived if they are cybernetic operators.
It’s about getting value from the game even if you’re unsuccessful as an individual:
Additionally, we’ve incorporated an automatic feature where certain aspects are communal. We’ve introduced data cards globally, enabling all participants to withdraw funds jointly from the same session. This kind of shared interaction enhances the feeling of, ‘Oh, interacting with my friends is always seamless and enjoyable.’
As an enthusiastic supporter, I’m excited to share that Marathon initially caters solely to trios of players. At launch, the game doesn’t support more than three players in a group. Solo play isn’t an option either, unless you choose to separate from your teammates when a raid commences.
Marathon is set to be released on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC on September 23, 2025.
