As a long-time Marvel enthusiast who’s been following the Hulk’s journey since his debut, this news has me absolutely green with excitement! The prospect of the Hulk returning to face off against Red Hulk in Captain America: Brave New World is just the smash-tastic development I needed after the thrilling Deadpool & Wolverine movie.

Just a few short days since the debut of Deadpool & Wolverine, I’m already buzzing with anticipation for the next Marvel Cinematic Universe installment. Amidst all the excitement, it seems like Anthony Mackie might have let slip a major plot point – he hinted that another Avenger could show up in Captain America: Brave New World!

The first trailer for “Captain America: Brave New World” was released a few weeks ago, showcasing Harrison Ford’s character Thunderbolt Ross, who is expected to transform into Red Hulk in the film. This has left fans wondering how Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, the new Captain America, could confront the Hulk, given he doesn’t have the super soldier serum. However, it seems that Mackie’s character might not be the one to fight the Red Hulk after all. In a recent interview, Mackie suggested the possibility of another character stepping up to battle Ross’s Red Hulk in “Captain America 4”, supporting an earlier unintentional leak.

In a chat with Entertainment Weekly at San Diego Comic-Con, Anthony Mackie (the actor portraying Sam Wilson/new Captain America in Brave New World) hinted that an experienced Marvel character could appear in the movie. When talking about how The Incredible Hulk is important for grasping the forthcoming MCU film, Mackie implied Bruce Banner/Hulk might be part of it. Responding to a question linking the 2008 film’s narrative to Captain America: Brave New World, Mackie, amidst Harrison Ford’s confusion, suggested that Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk could possibly show up. In contrast to Ford’s Red Hulk, Mackie referred to him as “the other Hulk.” Mackie explained, “Not the Red Hulk, but the other Hulk. There are multiple Hulks. So, when he shows up, his world, his universe, and his story are distinct from how we utilize him in our story.”

In a recent interview at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival held in February 2024, Mark Ruffalo, known for his role as MCU’s Hulk, hinted at potential upcoming projects. When asked if he would be part of Brave New World, he replied affirmatively with a “Yeah” and mentioned it would be fantastic. However, he later clarified that he had made an error in his initial statement. Despite this, Ruffalo confirmed he would reprise his role as Bruce Banner in the film, but then walked back on that statement. The last time Hulk was seen was in the 2022 Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, where he trained Jennifer Walters, who became the first female Hulk. There has been some uncertainty about Hulk’s role in Brave New World, with Variety reporting that he might not appear. However, considering several characters from The Incredible Hulk are set to return, such as Tim Blake Nelson’s The Leader, Liv Tyler’s Betty Ross, and Harrison Ford portraying ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross (replacing the late William Hurt), it’s possible that Hulk might still make an appearance in this project.

It’s possible that the Hulk, portrayed by Mark Ruffalo, will appear in Brave New World. This is reasonable considering that Steve Mackie’s Sam Wilson might struggle against Red Hulk without the Super Soldier Serum. While some Marvel Comics enthusiasts believe that Red Hulk’s base strength exceeds the regular Hulk’s, the Hulk’s unique trait of becoming stronger with rising anger means his power potential is limitless. As Hulk’s rage escalates, Red Hulk would likely have a hard time. This could suggest that the Hulk might be returning to his traditional, uncontrollable persona. Fans have expressed disappointment over the diminished aggression in the Hulk since Avengers: Endgame, where the character, now a blend of Hulk and Banner, can still cause destruction but chooses not to. If a fierce Hulk resurfaces to face Red Hulk, it could result in another iconic Marvel scene.

Whether or not Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk character will make an appearance in “Captain America: A New World,” set to release on Valentine’s Day, 2025, is yet to be determined.
