Charles Hoskinson, the creator of Cardano, is thrilled about the emergence of PRAGMA, an independent open source organization he helped establish. This significant step forward signifies a crucial milestone in Cardano’s mission to attain global reach and scalability as it strives to function as the worldwide financial infrastructure.
Cardano Makes Crucial Step Forward
In a recent announcement on X, the Cardano Foundation in collaboration with Blink Labs, dcSpark, Sundae Labs, and TxPipe unveiled PRAGMA. The goal of this partnership is to cultivate a strong and varied ecosystem that is essential for the necessary scalability and durability on a global scale.
Hoskinson emphasized in his remarks the importance of having numerous clients and a thriving ecosystem of open source initiatives and applications for a globally relevant protocol aiming to create the financial infrastructure of the world. I’m looking forward to witnessing teams collaborate on developing these clients and projects.
Interestingly, PRAGMA’s formation comes as a distinct and independent initiative within the ADA community, not directly coordinated with existing governance bodies such as IOHK. When questioned about the new group’s relation to these entities, Hoskinson stated, “They decided to form an entirely different group and not coordinate with Intersect. I’ve never had a formal meeting with them about their intent or the exactly structure and funding behind Pragma. I was actually only recently informed about their existence.”
He continued to explain the advantages of PRAGMA’s autonomy, expressing his pleasure at observing the community building their own frameworks and agendas. Although PRAGMA won’t accelerate the release of new features for Cardano, it does contribute to greater operational stability and an additional perspective on the technical definitions of Cardano.
What Pragma Is About
The Cardano Foundation’s official announcement provides further insight into PRAGMA’s goals and early undertakings. This new, non-profit open-source organization aims to progress blockchain software projects and cultivate an autonomous open-source community for ADA, with the possibility of expanding to other digital ledgers. The association’s founding documents will be signed on April 22, marking the beginning of its operational activities.
Sebastian Bode, Engineering Director at the Cardano Foundation and PRAGMA Board Member, emphasized the cooperative attitude behind this project. “PRAGMA signifies progress in the Cardano Foundation’s goal to establish Cardano as a public infrastructure. We are a dedicated team of software engineers from diverse backgrounds, working together on open-source projects to facilitate widespread blockchain adoption.”
PRGA initially intends to prioritize a limited range of significant projects. One of these projects is Amaru, which involves creating a full node using Rust and building it to harmoniously work alongside the current Haskell nodes. Another major undertaking is Aiken, an intelligent contract platform intended to streamline and augment the process of crafting smart contracts.
Frederik Gregaard, CEO of the Cardano Foundation, highlighted the wider significance of PRAGA’s creation for the community. At the Cardano Foundation, we promote the open-source development of the Cardano ecosystem, encouraging collaborative projects that expand its range and enhance the caliber and volume of blockchain solutions. The establishment of PRAGMA marks a notable achievement in this endeavor.
Moving forward, PRAGMA intends to widen its community to include developers associated with the larger ADA network by the year 2025. This strategic goal goes beyond just incorporating ongoing projects but also encourages the development of innovative and impactful tools that could significantly improve the usage and capabilities of blockchain technology.
