Chrono Trigger Celebrating 31st Anniversary with New Merch Release

Square Enix is celebrating the 31st anniversary of the classic RPG Chrono Trigger with a new line of keychains. Released in 1995 for the Super Nintendo, Chrono Trigger quickly became a fan favorite and is still considered one of the greatest games ever made. Its enduring popularity has led to multiple re-releases over the years.

Since its debut on the Super Nintendo, Chrono Trigger has been released on many different consoles, allowing more people to enjoy the classic RPG. It first came to PlayStation in Japan in 1999, shortly before the release of Chrono Cross, and then to North America in 2001. Over the years, Chrono Trigger has also been ported to the Nintendo DS, PC, and mobile devices, and was playable on the Wii’s Virtual Console. To mark the game’s 31st anniversary, Square Enix is now offering a set of special keychains.

As a huge Chrono Trigger fan, I was so excited to see Square Enix announce these new keychains! They’re calling it the One Mark Collection, and it’s to celebrate the game’s anniversary. Basically, they’re making keychains of all the playable characters, and each character gets two different designs – one where they’re just standing there, and another showing them in an attack pose. That makes 14 keychains confirmed so far, but they’re also teasing a 15th mystery one! They’re going to be released in Japan through gacha machines and will cost around 500 yen. You can get them with either a rubber strap or a metal clip, which is awesome!

These keychains are a great tribute to the beloved characters of Chrono Trigger, but they might be hard to get outside of Japan. Square Enix hasn’t announced if they’ll be available internationally, only confirming their release in Japan through a gacha system. It seems they’re only available in Japan through these machines, with no online purchase options. Plus, with so many different versions to collect, completing a set could become quite costly for fans.

As fans celebrate the 31st anniversary of Chrono Trigger, the future of the series remains uncertain. Chrono Cross is currently the last completely original game, with only a remake and ports of Chrono Trigger released afterward. Though Square Enix reportedly began work on a third game, Chrono Break, in the early 2000s, it was cancelled before being officially revealed. Despite this, fans continue to hope for a return to this beloved RPG series.

Fans have been asking for a new installment in the Chrono series, hoping to revisit its science fiction universe. Many have specifically requested a remake of the original Chrono Trigger, similar to the recent remakes Square Enix has done for Dragon Quest. Yuji Horii, a key creator of Chrono Trigger, has mentioned that he’s been thinking about a remake, especially after seeing the success of the HD-2D remakes of the first three Dragon Quest games. This gives fans hope that this classic Square Enix RPG might finally be revived.
