It is with a certain degree of theatrical flourish that Coinbase International Exchange has announced its integration with Copper’s ClearLoop network, a move that promises to bring a touch of sophistication to the rather boisterous world of institutional crypto trading. Amidst the “high” demand for more efficient and secure trading infrastructure, this collaboration is nothing short of a sartorial upgrade for the digital asset realm.
As of Thursday, institutions can now manage collateral and settle trades in near real-time, all without the need to move funds onto the exchange. This, according to a press release shared with CryptoMoon, is akin to a gentleman being able to adjust his cravat without leaving the comfort of his drawing room.
The primary aim of this elegant maneuver is to reduce counterparty risk and boost capital efficiency, two concerns that have long plagued the institutional crypto participants, much like a persistent cough at a soiree. Ethena, a stablecoin protocol known for its role in hedging USDe, has been named a day-one launch partner, adding a dash of elegance to the proceedings.
“Institutions want this functionality and flexibility because ClearLoop enables a jumpstep in the off-exchange settlement times for institutions using Coinbase International Exchange,” a Coinbase spokesperson told CryptoMoon. “This improves the user experience of managing collateral, reducing counterparty risk and improving capital efficiency.”
Coinbase-Copper integration begins with USDC
The integration, regulated under the Bermuda Monetary Authority, is currently available exclusively with USDC (USDC). Coinbase, ever the trendsetter, plans to support additional collateral assets in the near future, much like a fashionable boutique expanding its collection.
ClearLoop, developed by the London-based Copper, uses multiparty computation (MPC) technology to allow clients to trade virtual balances on centralized exchanges while settlement occurs on Copper’s infrastructure. This reduces the need to hold large amounts of assets on exchanges, a move that is as practical as it is stylish.
“This significant integration with Coinbase International Exchange expands institutional access to rapid, secure off-exchange trading and settlement,” said Amar Kuchinad, global CEO of Copper. “This is a milestone in the development of a mature digital assets industry, much like the first appearance of a monocle in high society.”
Coinbase International Exchange, launched in 2023, has become a key player in global crypto derivatives, offering more than 150 listed assets and up to 20x leverage. The exchange joins ClearLoop’s growing network, which already includes Deribit, Bybit, OKX, and Bitfinex, a veritable who’s who of the crypto world.
“Institutional clients demand both security and agility when managing digital assets,” said Marc Zeitouni, CEO of Coinbase International Exchange, a sentiment that could just as easily apply to the demands of a discerning patron at a high-stakes card game.
Institutions eye bigger crypto bets
A March survey by Coinbase and EY-Parthenon revealed that 83% of institutional investors plan to increase their crypto allocations in 2025, with many already holding altcoins beyond Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH). The survey named XRP (XRP) and Solana (SOL) the most popular holdings, a testament to the growing sophistication of the crypto investor.
It also revealed that a majority of respondents expect to dedicate 5% or more of their portfolios to crypto this year, a move that is as bold as it is fashionable. Similarly, a May report by Fireblocks found that 90% of institutional players are using or exploring stablecoins, with almost half already deploying them for payments, a trend that is as inevitable as the rising tide of a summer evening.
