From its initial days as CS:GO to its present state as CS2, Counter-Strike has consistently expanded at an impressive pace, even during times of fluctuation.
It appears so far that those who prophesied the demise of Counter-Strike following the launch of CS2 were quite incorrect in their predictions.

Counter-Strike 2 Player Count (March 2025)
On March 1st, 2025, CS2 reached its all-time highest number of simultaneous players with 1,789,374, a record since its release. Notably, since mid-February, the average number of players in CS2 has surpassed one million for the first time as well. The previous peak of popularity for Counter-Strike was back in May 2023 when CS:GO boasted a player peak of 1,818,773 and an average of over 1.1 million players.
Previously noted, Counter-Strike 2 currently holds the number one position in Steam’s Most Played games list. Only three other titles – PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds: BATTLEGROUNDS, Black Myth: Wukong, and Palworld – have ever had larger peak concurrent player numbers. To illustrate CS2’s immense popularity, it is currently the second most played game on Steam, with nearly twice as many active players as PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS.
Why is CS2 More Popular Than CS:GO?
Despite initial strong disapproval from the community upon its debut, CS2 managed to rekindle interest among long-time fans who had fallen out of touch and attracted many novice players. The game’s esports scene has experienced remarkable growth since the COVID-19 era, which shifted competitions online only, captivating hundreds of thousands of viewers daily. Although CS2 is not without its imperfections, Valve has actively worked to resolve significant problems, introduced a new competitive format for seasonal events called Premier, and continues to refresh the map selection.
