Lo, one’s digital darlings, the Punks—pixel-perfect progeny of the mathematical void—have swapped parental hands in what some may call a rhapsody of nonprofit ambition: The Infinite Node Foundation (NODE), now steward of this curious horde, gently pries free the IP diadem from Yuga Labs’ surprisingly pliant fingers.
Strange Bequest: Infinite Node’s Surreal Embrace of CryptoPunks’ IP
First inked into being by Larva Labs in 2017—those digital cherubs known ubiquitously (and alarmingly) as CryptoPunks—thrust the very notion of digital “ownership” into a maelstrom of 10,000 algorithmic personalities. NODE—whilst clutching a manifesto 🧾, three-pronged like Neptune’s trident—promises digital taxidermy of these cyber-modish punks, communal rapture, and (in an audacious stroke!) a leap onto the velvet laps of global palaces of Art with a capital “A.” NODE’s cabinet is not lacking: Matt Hall and John Watkinson (original fathers), Wylie Aronow (the Yuga bard), and Erick Calderon—punks’ modern-day oracle. Yes, all hands on the crypto-deck.
Though these punk adolescents have hustled up a whopping $377 million in secondary-market pocket change this past annum (not bad for “faces” only a JavaScript mother could love), museums have yet to offer them a cot in the great halls. NODE vows a Palo Alto parade: every last pixelated Punk on display, paired with an Ethereum node humming along for the onchain haunted house effect. A traveling circus for the blockchain era, perhaps? The dream: someday the same elite who stare at water lilies and soup cans will gawk at Punks in reverent confusion. 🎩🎨
2022’s plot twist—Yuga Labs’ acquisitive flourish—ends, apparently, with a “full-circle” pirouette. Aronow, shedding a gentle digital tear, knighthoods NODE as the rightful Punk-Protector. Hall and Watkinson, meanwhile, wax sentimental about NODE’s compatibility with their decentralized pipe dream. “Perfect,” say they, “as a cat in a sunbeam.”
Behold: never before has a nonprofit clutched such a weighty scepter—full IP rights over the internet’s own nascent heirlooms! NODE, swollen with endowment and ambition, intends to topple crusty art-world dominoes with a blockchain-scented wind. Academic and curatorial gatekeepers, beware the encroaching army of sprites.
Later this year, the Palo Alto fun-house opens. Cryptopunks—crypto-monkeys on the blockchain typewriter—are fated for immersion in the sacred swamp of “art-historical discourse.” Their price, however, is having a tragicomic slide from the Olympian heights of 113 ETH, limping now at 47 ETH since October 2021. The gods giveth, the gods dumpeth. 🥲
