CWA Issues Statement On Microsoft’s Latest Layoffs

As a lifelong gamer and union supporter, I find myself deeply saddened by Microsoft’s latest round of layoffs affecting 650 employees. It’s disheartening to see such a profitable corporation like Microsoft resorting to such measures when they could be investing in their workforce instead.

According to the Communications Workers of America (CWA), they have released a statement regarding Microsoft’s recent round of job cuts, which affects approximately 650 employees who are being let go by the company.

Though the CWA doesn’t speak for those who were recently let go, it does voice concerns of employees at Microsoft, including developers working on World of Warcraft within Blizzard. They express their dismay over further layoffs in a company known as one of the world’s biggest and financially successful corporations.

Samuel Cooper, Senior Producer at World of Warcraft and WoWGG-CWA member, expressed through a statement that every worker should have the right to express their opinions about their work and the effects of job reductions. Although it’s disappointing that a financially successful company like Microsoft might achieve lasting success by eliminating the jobs of 650 employees, such thoughtless layoffs are becoming distressingly common.

Together, we express our empathy for those who’ve recently lost employment, and invite every video game professional to unite with us in creating labor unions. This way, we can support one another and safeguard our shared interests.

Though unions don’t have the power to entirely stop layoffs, the Communications Workers of America (CWA) asserts that they significantly influence how such job reductions are managed overall.

The CWA affirmed its dedication to assisting workers at Microsoft and across the tech and gaming industry in their efforts to establish a union, aiming to enhance their working conditions.
