Cyberpunk 2077: Project Orion May Have Replacement for Johnny Silverhand

As a seasoned Cyberpunk fan with years of immersion in Night City’s neon-lit alleys and gritty streets, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia when reminiscing about the iconic characters that have graced the game’s lore. Among these legends, Johnny Silverhand has undeniably left an indelible mark, yet there’s another name that echoes through the city’s underbelly – Morgan Blackhand.

The world of Cyberpunk 2077 is rich in detail, as CD Projekt Red drew heavily from the original tabletop RPG created by Mike Pondsmith to construct a detailed and authentic game environment. This immersive quality of Cyberpunk 2077 is further enhanced by its bustling districts, distinctive slang, and intriguing non-player characters (NPCs).

Among all characters in “Cyberpunk 2077”, Johnny Silverhand, portrayed by Keanu Reeves, leaves the most lasting impression on the game. This character joins the player’s character (V) for much of the game after his digital personality is transferred to V via a dangerous Relic shard. Johnny Silverhand sets off the main storyline in “Cyberpunk 2077”. He frequently shares sharp, thought-provoking remarks to influence V’s choices and provides insight into Night City’s complicated past. Johnny Silverhand’s tale is intertwined with many of the game’s endings, which implies that CD Projekt Red might focus on new characters in “Cyberpunk 2077’s” next installment, Project Orion. However, another character from the “Cyberpunk” universe could serve as an effective replacement and introduce players to a fresh chapter of Night City’s history.

Morgan Blackhand: Night City Legend

A seasoned warrior from the Second Central American Conflict and the Fourth Business War, Morgan Blackhand penned the definitive guide on mercenary work in Night City. Known for his pragmatic and non-violent methods, Blackhand was one of the most demanded freelancers during the early 21st century. He garnered respect by taking assignments from private citizens such as Kerry Eurodyne and corporations like Militech. Despite owning cybernetic enhancements, including a cybernetic arm like his namesake, Blackhand predominantly relied on his natural physical and strategic abilities. This caught the notice of competing mercenary Adam Smasher, who viewed Blackhand as the embodiment of his “organic versus mechanical” philosophy.

In the world of tabletop lore, I’ve always been a fan of Morgan Blackhand, and his last mission led him to cross paths with Johnny Silverhand. As the story goes, during the assault on Arasaka Tower, they united with other top-tier operatives. Adam Smasher was sent by Arasaka to eliminate us. After completing my part of the mission, I was preparing to exit when I encountered Adam Smasher. This heavily enhanced mercenary, eager to demonstrate his supremacy, provoked me into a confrontation upon slaying Johnny Silverhand and wounding another team member. The ensuing clash between us raged on, but its conclusion remains uncertain, as a nuclear bomb planted by our team inside one of the towers was set off shortly afterwards.

Morgan Blackhand’s Absence in Cyberpunk 2077

In addition to being the quintessential solo character created by Mike Pondsmith for the Cyberpunk universe, Morgan Blackhand is a prominent figure in the Cyberpunk lore. Numerous non-player characters (NPCs) in Cyberpunk 2077, such as Jackie Welles, admire and look up to Blackhand, positioning him alongside other Night City legends like Johnny Silverhand, Adam Smasher, and Andrew Weyland. However, the casual mentions of Blackhand throughout the game don’t fully capture his presence in it, and some critical aspects of his backstory appear to have undergone changes in the main storyline of Cyberpunk 2077.

In Johnny Silverhand’s opening mission, character V experiences the rockstar’s past recollections of the attack on the Arasaka Tower. This initial encounter with the character is impactful, but it strays from Mike Pondsmith’s original storyline. Notably, Morgan Blackhand is not present during this incident, and actions typically attributed to him—such as planting a nuclear device and battling Adam Smasher on the landing pad—are instead carried out by Johnny Silverhand.

Bringing Morgan Blackhand to Project Orion

It’s unknown if Morgan Blackhand’s absence in Cyberpunk 2077 is a true retcon or just a result of Johnny Silverhand’s unreliable narration, but CD Projekt Red has the perfect way to address it. Making Morgan Blackhand a key figure in Project Orion’s story could build upon the many references to his character and cement him as a true Night City legend. Additionally, it would help to fill in the narrative gaps created by his exclusion from Cyberpunk 2077.

In another scenario, a new actor might step into Johnny Silverhand’s shoes from the initial game, but since his character is distinctly unique, it wouldn’t feel like a rehash. This flexibility allows CD Projekt Red to craft Project Orion as either a prequel or sequel, depending on the ambiguous fate of Morgan Blackhand. For those who aren’t deeply invested in Blackhand’s backstory, they could follow a strategy similar to that of Johnny Silverhand and Solomon Reed, by casting a renowned celebrity to elevate Blackhand as a significant attraction for the game.
