Daemons of the Shadow Realm’s Director Produced This Beautiful Forgotten 2010s Shojo Anime

I’m seriously hyped for the Spring 2026 anime season! We’re finally getting the first season of Witch Hat Atelier, which I’ve been waiting for ages to see animated, and Re:Zero is coming back – yes! But honestly, I’m most excited about Daemons of the Shadow Realm. It’s based on a manga by Hiromu Arakawa, the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist, so you know it’s going to be good. And get this – Masahiro Ando, who’s worked on classics like Ghost in the Shell, Wolf’s Rain, and even Cowboy Bebop: The Movie, is directing! It’s shaping up to be an amazing season.

Many anime fans know Ando as the producer of action-packed series like Daemons of the Shadow Realm, but he also directed the fantasy romance anime Snow White with the Red Hair, which is adapted from a popular manga. While Daemons of the Shadow Realm is aimed at a male audience, Snow White with the Red Hair is geared towards girls. As the title suggests, it’s inspired by the classic Snow White story, but the anime quickly develops its own unique storyline after the first episode, moving beyond the familiar tale.

What Is Snow White With the Red Hair About?

A Herbalist Continues To Chart Her Own Path

Created by Sorata Akiduki, Snow White with the Red Hair tells the story of Shirayuki, a talented herbalist who lives in the kingdom of Tanbarun. She’s known for her kindness and intelligence, but also for her striking red hair. When Prince Raj, a rather reckless nobleman, hears about her, he demands she become one of his concubines. Shirayuki is offended and decides to flee, determined to forge her own path. As a defiant gesture, she playfully leaves a bundle of her red hair behind before she goes.

I absolutely love following Shirayuki’s story! She meets Prince Zen – can you believe it? – along with his awesome companions, Kiki and Mitsuhide, while she’s traveling. It turns out he’s not just any young man, but the Prince of Clarines! With Zen’s help, she finally escapes the unwanted attention of Raj, but she’s so intrigued by Zen and his kingdom that she decides to stay and pursue her dream of becoming a court herbalist. She really throws herself into her work and quickly becomes something of a local hero, and of course, she and Zen start to fall for each other. It’s such a sweet story!

A Breathtaking First and Second Season

The Narrative Varies Between Being Cozy and Action-Packed

Though it only has two seasons, Snow White with the Red Hair is a delightful anime to watch. The animation was handled by Bones, with direction from Masahiro Ando. The beautiful and whimsical soundtrack, composed by Michiru Ōshima (known for her work on Anne Shirley, Little Witch Academia, and the original Fullmetal Alchemist), perfectly complements the story. All of these elements combine to create a charming, fairy tale-like atmosphere that fans love. The story of Shirayuki and Zen is generally peaceful, though it explores medical mysteries and reveals that both characters have faced hardships, without ever letting go of their ambitions.

Season two of Snow White with the Red Hair is more dramatic than the first, adding a dangerous pirate storyline and delving into Shirayuki’s history. Through it all, Shirayuki and Zen continue to support each other, always ready to help when the other is in need. Beyond their blossoming romance, viewers will also learn more about the supporting characters – the dedicated Mistuhide and Kiki, the playful but kind Obi, and even Zen’s brother, Izana Wisteria, the crown prince.

How Can Fans Keep up With the Story?

The Manga Is Still Ongoing and Expanding on Characters New and Old

The anime adaptation of Snow White with the Red Hair, like many shojo manga series, only covers a portion of the original story. If you’re invested in Shirayuki and Zen’s relationship and want to know what happens next, continuing with the manga is a great idea. The manga expands on the stories of popular side characters like Kiki, Obi, and Mitsuhide, and also gives Shirayuki’s work as an herbalist a more central role, significantly impacting her journey. While the manga maintains the anime’s generally calm and gentle tone, you can also expect exciting and suspenseful conflicts that will keep you engaged.

If you enjoy anime like The Apothecary Diaries or Yona of the Dawn, or even classic Disney movies, Snow White with the Red Hair is a fantastic choice. It’s also a great starting point for anyone new to anime. Don’t expect much from the traditional fairy tale beyond the heroine’s name and a brief appearance of the poisoned apple. Shirayuki is a well-developed character – intelligent, courageous, kind, and with a strong moral compass. Her charming romance with Zen adds to the appeal of this delightful anime, directed by Masahiro Ando, and it’s a series that deserves a wider audience.
