Dead by Daylight features a wide range of iconic horror characters from films, television, and video games. Players can take on the roles of terrifying villains like the Demogorgon from Stranger Things, Nemesis from Resident Evil, and Sadako from The Ring. These characters are among the most memorable and formidable in horror, and while they’re impressive to play, they can be challenging to learn.
Next up is Ghost Face, also known as Danny Johnson. Originally from the Scream movies, this killer is a regular human with a dark and disturbing sense of humor. While he might not seem overwhelmingly powerful in Dead by Daylight, Ghost Face is surprisingly popular with players. It takes some practice to learn how to effectively use his unique abilities, but many find him a worthwhile character to master.
If you’re new to playing as Danny (Ghost Face), be aware that he doesn’t have much ability to counter looping – a common tactic players use to escape. The best way to deal with this is to choose perks that make up for this weakness. This article will show you some of the best Ghost Face builds to help you get started, with guides for both new and experienced players.
The Ghost Face: Best Beginner Build
Getting Into The Chase
Ghost Face can seem tricky for beginners because he doesn’t have many strong starting perks. However, he has helpful perks like Thrilling Tremors, which lets him spot generators being repaired from a distance, and I’m All Ears, a great perk for chasing Survivors. This strategy focuses on putting pressure on those generators, driving Survivors away, and slowing down their ability to heal.
- Thrilling Tremors (The Ghost Face) – After picking up a Survivor, all generators not being repaired by Survivors are blocked by the Entity for a certain period. This effect has a cooldown.
- I’m All Ears (The Ghost Face) – Every 40 seconds, when a Survivor fast vaults within the killer’s vicinity, you see their aura for a brief period.
- Hex: No One Escapes Death (General Perk) – After the final generator is completed, all Survivors suffer from the Exposed status ailment, and the killer gains the Haste effect until the Hex Totem is cleansed.
- Sloppy Butcher (General Perk) – Basic attacks cause the Mangled and Hemorrhage status ailments, slowing down healing by 25% and regressing healing progress when left unfinished.

Making Up For Danny’s Weaknesses
Ghost Face isn’t very fast at chasing Survivors. He also can’t naturally slow them down, so successful players often use perks that reveal Survivor locations or temporarily hinder generator progress.
To quickly locate and focus on Survivors, the Lethal Pursuer perk is a great choice, allowing you to pinpoint them with almost certainty. While some Killers benefit more from perks that boost movement speed, Ghost Face specifically gains a strong advantage from the aura-reading ability of Nowhere To Hide, and Lethal Pursuer will enhance that even further. Finally, Scourge Hook: Pain Resonance is a dependable perk to maintain consistent pressure across the map.
- Lethal Pursuer (The Nemesis) –At the start of the trial, the 3 generators furthest from the killer’s starting location are blocked for an extended duration or until the first survivor is downed.
- Nowhere To Hide (The Knight) – Kicking a generator reveals the auras of survivors nearby that generator for a brief period
- Pop Goes The Weasel (The Clown) – After hooking a survivor, kicking a generator regresses it massively.
- Scourge Hook: Pain Resonance (The Artist) – The Killer starts with four tokens. For each different Survivor hooked on a white Scourge Hook, lose one token and explode the generator with the most progress, causing it to lose massive progress.
The Ghost Face: Best Add-Ons
As a Ghost Face main, I’ve been trying out a bunch of add-ons to really maximize his Night Shroud power. I’ve put together a list of what I think are the strongest ones, and I’m ranking them based on how rare they are to find in the Bloodweb. It’s been a game-changer figuring out which add-ons work best!
“Philly”
Even though it’s a frequently used addition, the “Philly” add-on is one of the most effective for The Ghost Face. It speeds up the process of marking Survivors by 10%, letting you expose them faster while stalking. This saves time and reduces the chance of being discovered.
Walleye’s Matchbook
The Walleye’s Matchbook is a simple add-on for Ghost Face that shortens the cooldown of his Night Shroud power by 3 seconds. Normally, Night Shroud has a 17-second cooldown, but this add-on lets you use it again a bit faster after it ends.
Olsen’s Address Book
Olsen’s Address Book is a surprisingly useful Uncommon perk given what it does. Being able to see the location of a Marked Survivor for five seconds while chasing them can really help you get the kill and keep the pressure on. It works especially well with the Lethal Pursuer perk, which is a key part of a strong Ghost Face build.
Olsen’s Wallet
If you want The Ghost Face’s power to recharge quickly during a chase, Olsen’s Wallet might be a better choice than Walleye’s Matchbook. This special add-on instantly refills The Ghost Face’s abilities whenever you break a pallet or wall, letting you stalk Survivors more often.
Drop-Leg Knife Sheath
The Drop-Leg Knife Sheath is a strong addition for The Ghost Face, granting him a 10% speed boost for 5 seconds whenever he marks a Survivor. This add-on works well with perks like Play with Your Food, giving Survivors less time to respond before the Killer can attack.
Driver’s License
If Survivors are completing generators too quickly, the Ghost Face’s Driver’s License perk will cause any generator they’re working on to explode, blocking them from repairing it for 15 seconds. This significant change slows down the game and pairs effectively with other perks that hinder repair progress, such as Scourge Hook: Pain Resonance and Pop Goes The Weasel.
Outdoor Security Camera
Okay, so as a huge fan, let me tell you about this perk! If you’re not amazing at finding Survivors right away, the Outdoor Security Camera is a lifesaver. Basically, whenever you down a Survivor who’s been marked, it shows you the auras of all the other Survivors for seven seconds. It’s awesome because you can quickly see what generators people are working on and figure out where to go next. Plus, it helps you avoid those annoying flashlight saves and pallets, and honestly, it can really help you get ahead and dominate the game. It’s a game-changer for me!
“Ghost Face Caught On Tape”
Ghost Face in Dead by Daylight is unique because he has two truly powerful add-ons. “Ghost Face Caught on Tape” is considered his best, letting him stay stealthed in Night Shroud consistently if he can injure a Survivor or two early in the match. This add-on significantly speeds up the game and lets him gain a strong advantage, making it much easier to win.
How To Unlock Daniel Johnson/The Ghost Face In Dead By Daylight
Like all licensed characters in Dead by Daylight, Ghost Face isn’t available for free. You’ll need to purchase him separately. Chapter 12, featuring Ghost Face, is unique because it only includes a Killer and not a Survivor, which is why it costs less than most DLC packs. Currently, only this chapter and the Chucky chapter have been released with just a Killer.
To get Ghost Face, you need to buy Chapter 12. It costs 500 Auric Cells (which is the same as $4.99) on PC and consoles. Because he’s a licensed character, you can’t unlock him with Iridescent Shards, and he’s not available in any bundles. He’s also not included in the Dead by Daylight: Gold Edition.
Is The Ghost Face A Good Dead By Daylight Killer For Beginners?
Okay, so Dead by Daylight has a TON of Killers now, which is awesome, but also a little overwhelming if you’re just starting out! It should mean there’s someone for everyone, but honestly, buying them all isn’t realistic. Most of us beginners end up sticking with the free Killers or grabbing just a few from the DLC. Which brings me to my question: is Danny a good choice if you’re trying to figure out who to buy first?
Really, any Killer is a good choice when you’re first starting out. While it takes a lot more practice to become skilled with challenging Killers like The Nurse or The Hillbilly, learning them can be more rewarding than starting with easier ones like The Wraith or Albert Wesker. Plus, mastering those tougher Killers, especially The Nurse, feels incredibly satisfying.
Ghost Face is an interesting Killer. He’s fairly basic in design, focusing on sneaking up on Survivors and using a standard attack. While his strategies don’t sound complicated, he’s actually quite challenging to play well. He isn’t very strong at direct chases; instead, he excels at stalking. This requires players to know the maps well and understand how Survivors typically play so they can anticipate their moves. Surprisingly, despite being a relatively simple Killer, Ghost Face isn’t the best choice for new players.
Is The Ghost Face A Good Killer To Main In 2026?
We’ve talked about how easy Ghost Face is to learn, so now let’s get to the real question: is he actually worth playing?
Just to be clear, if you’re excited to play as Ghost Face because you’re a fan of Scream, feel free! It doesn’t matter if he’s a strong or weak character in Dead by Daylight.
When Scream 7 came out in theaters on February 27, 2026, interest in the character Danny, and by extension Ghost Face, increased in the game Dead by Daylight. However, the game developers didn’t update Ghost Face to coincide with the movie’s release, and his popularity eventually leveled off. He’s currently just outside the top 10 most-played Killers, which isn’t a bad position at all. This ranking accurately shows where Ghost Face stands in 2026: He’s a solid choice, but not one of the most powerful Killers in the game.
Ghost Face can be effective in casual matches where the main goal is to startle players, especially those who aren’t paying close attention or working together. In more competitive games, a skilled player can also succeed with him, but there are generally stronger choices available.
Ghost Face Is An M1 Killer
Some Killers, often called ‘M1 Killers,’ primarily use their standard attack to injure Survivors, with their unique power playing a supporting role. While skilled players can succeed with these Killers, they generally have fewer options available, making it easier for Survivors to avoid or counter them. For example, Ghost Face can be effective on smaller, indoor maps like ‘The Game,’ but struggles on larger maps like ‘Mother’s Dwelling’.
Ghost Face’s Stealth Mode and Stalk Meter
Ghost Face has a unique ability called Night Shroud that turns him invisible, as long as he doesn’t attack or get seen by Survivors. When he’s within 40 meters of a Survivor, players can hold a button to fill up a Stalk Meter – it fills faster while leaning around corners. Once the meter is full, the Survivor is marked as Exposed, meaning Ghost Face can instantly down them for one minute. Importantly, marked Survivors can’t reveal Ghost Face’s location to others.
A popular tactic involves filling the stalk meter to almost full, then pausing. After that, quickly move behind the Survivor, tap the meter again, and immediately attack.
Alternative Killers That Are Better Than Ghost Face (In 2026)
We hope Ghost Face remains playable on a few maps, but he’s not one of the strongest Killers. There are simply better choices available now that offer more stealth, speed, and overall flexibility.
- The Shape – After a revamp toward the end of 2025, Mike Myers went from a joke to one of the better M1 Killers, if not downright the best. At Tier 3, The Shape puts pressure on all Survivors, while Ghost Face can only target one at a time. That said, Danny is a better stealth option.
- The Wraith – On large maps that expose Ghost Face’s slow movement, The Wraith is a more viable candidate. He moves extremely quickly and remains Undetectable, allowing him to patrol generators effectively. However, he is not a one-hit kill option like Ghost Face can be in expert hands.
- The Ghoul – Arguably, this Killer has become Ghost Face’s replacement, offering a playstyle that is a more aggressive take on stealth. Kagune Leap provides great mobility and enables Ken to close distances quickly.
