Dead By Daylight: Who Is Tomie?

Dead By Daylight: Who Is Tomie?

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for survival horror games and a soft spot for all things creepy and unsettling, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming collaboration between Dead by Daylight and the legendary Junji Ito, particularly the introduction of Tomie as a playable character. Having grown up reading Ito’s chilling manga tales that left me both captivated and sleepless, this crossover feels like a dream come true.

The survival horror game “Dead by Daylight” has unveiled a chilling partnership with renowned horror manga artist Junji Ito, known for his decades of creating terrifying manga series. Starting in 2025, this collaboration will bring eight unique skins to the game – two Legendary and six Very Rare – that will transform its Killers and Survivors into some of Ito’s most recognized characters and monstrosities. Among these is Tomie, one of Ito’s most iconic creations.

Tomie: A Beautiful But Terrifying Immortal Monster

At first glance, Tomie Kawakami may merely seem as a strikingly attractive young woman with black hair and a unique beauty mark below her eye. However, beneath this facade lies something far from human – an immortal monster capable of immense cruelty. The specifics of her origin remain unclear, but she appears to be a demonic entity resembling a succubus. Her mere presence can either captivate people with obsession or push them towards madness.

Tomie possesses unique abilities, such as causing intense infatuation in men and extreme fear and hysteria in women, leading individuals to perform violent acts, including murder and cannibalism. Those exposed to Tomie, particularly women, may undergo a transformation into another version of her, especially if they come into contact with her blood, for instance through a transfusion. Remarkably, if Tomie were to perish, she would rejuvenate; she also has the capacity to generate more Tomies from her body, much like a tumor reproducing.

Tomie Is One Of Junji Ito’s Most Frequently Appearing Characters

In 1987, Junji Ito first unveiled the character Tomie to the world, through a collection of short stories about her published in the monthly magazine “Halloween.” Over time, he has produced numerous anthologies centered around Tomie, and she’s even made appearances alongside some of his other famous characters like Souichi, who is known for being cursed.

The tales of Tomie have been transformed into a sequence of live-action movies, a TV show named “Tomie: Another Face,” and a book titled “Tomie: Replay.” Additionally, episodes featuring Tomie were incorporated into the 2018 animated compilation “Junji Ito Collection” and its 2023 follow-up “Junji Ito Maniac,” which both streamed on Netflix. A Tomie series was also proposed for the TV platform Quibi; however, its future is uncertain after Quibi ceased operations in 2020.

Dead By Daylight‘s Tomie Draws From Her Appearance In “Painter”

In Dead by Daylight, the distinctive skin for the Killer The Spirit, known as Tomie’s Legendary Skin, is largely influenced by a short story titled “The Painter.” This story originally appeared in the second volume of the Tomie manga series and was later transformed into an episode within the anime anthology, Junji Ito Collection.

In the story titled ‘Painter’, we follow an artist named Mori who develops an intense infatuation towards a woman named Tomie. He yearns to create the ultimate portrait of her. After discovering a photograph taken by a friend, he uncovers a shocking truth: Tomie possesses two faces, one beautiful and the other terrifying. Mori then decides to paint Tomie in her monstrous form, which enrages her, ultimately leading him to take her life (unaware of her immortality). In a chilling sequence of events, each piece of Tomie he dismembers miraculously transforms into an exact replica of the original. By the tale’s end, it is suggested that Mori has succumbed to madness after his confrontation with Tomie.

In Dead by Daylight, the Tomie skin adorns her character in a short white dress reminiscent of the tale, featuring two faces – one grotesque, one enchanting – facing opposite directions. This unique skin comes with additional audio lines that include Tomie’s chilling screams, possibly alluding to her grisly demise at Mori’s hands. As a spine-tingling Killer, Survivors will undoubtedly find Tomie’s presence unsettling when the Junji Ito collaboration arrives in Dead by Daylight during January 2025.
