As a seasoned researcher who has witnessed the evolution of technology and its misuse over the years, I can’t help but feel a sense of both awe and concern when incidents like the Apple iPhone 16 launch scam unfold. The rapid advancement of AI, particularly deepfake technology, is indeed impressive, but it’s also becoming a double-edged sword.
On September 9, 2024, scammers managed to steal the spotlight from Apple’s iPhone 16 launch event by creating fake videos featuring their CEO, Tim Cook, in an attempt to deceive potential customers.
Indeed, this shows the spiraling threat of AI-driven fraud as cybercriminals start to make use of high-profile events to dupe unsuspecting victims into cryptocurrency scams.
The Deepfake Trap
At the “Glowtime” presentation, where Apple unveiled its latest iPhone features, several live broadcasts featuring deepfake versions of Tim Cook were circulating on platforms like YouTube.
It appears these trustworthy-looking sources convinced listeners to transfer certain cryptocurrencies (such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, or Tether) to a particular address, promising them double the amount they invested.
Fraudsters skillfully altered and updated previous videos of Cook using advanced artificial intelligence technology, tricking over half a million spectators by making the deception appear authentic.

One of those deceptively created streams accumulated more than 355,000 views, with the scammers going so far as to create a channel that mimicked the branding of Apple.
Including a QR code within the videos, allowing individuals to quickly identify and scan it for sending money, significantly boosted the perceived authenticity of the platform.
Breaking
It appears that the official YouTube channel of Apple US may have been compromised, with a false AI-generated video of Tim Cook allegedly broadcasting and requesting Bitcoin. This incident seems to coincide with the #AppleEvent.

Under a false identity as a cook, these swindlers promised viewers instant returns on their investments, claiming, “Upon finishing your deposit, the system itself will handle processing and return an amount of cryptocurrency that’s twice the one you initially deposited.
But once the victims sent their money, they found themselves with empty wallets and no recourse.
The Aftermath
Quickly addressing the issue at hand, YouTube swiftly took down the false streams and terminated the associated accounts. However, prior to a complete resolution of the scandal, significant harm had unfortunately already occurred.
A multitude flocked to various social media platforms like X, expressing their encounters and alerting others about the falsehood. Some also showed frustration over the ease with which swindlers had deceived a well-respected figure such as Tim Cook, emphasizing the importance of increased caution in our digital era.
A Call For Awareness
It’s not just a one-time occurrence; scammers are increasingly taking advantage of advanced deepfake technology to convincingly mimic well-known figures like Elon Musk. For instance, there were instances of such fraud involving deepfakes of Musk during the recent launch of SpaceX’s Starship rocket.
It’s crucial to exercise caution as scams involving cryptocurrencies are increasingly common nowadays. The allure of quick profits could cloud judgement and make one more susceptible to such deceit. Always verify the authenticity of offers, particularly those that appear unusually attractive or seem implausible.
