Destiny 2 Steam Player Count is Dropping

Summary

  • Destiny 2 Steam player count hits an all-time low of 24,826.5 players on average in December 2024.
  • The game’s peak player count of 39,764 players is also the lowest all-time peak.
  • Destiny 2’s recent bugs and issues during the Dawning event may be reasons for the game’s declining player count.

As a gamer with a decade-long love affair with Destiny, seeing the game’s player count drop to an all-time low is like witnessing the fall of the Last City itself. I remember the days when Destiny 2 was the lifeblood of my gaming world, the beacon that drew me in and kept me hooked for hours on end.

Over the past month, the number of active players for Destiny 2 on Steam has hit an all-time low, leading to some concerns about where the game might be headed by 2025. The significant drop in Destiny 2 players can be linked back to shortly after the release of The Final Shape in June, as the long-running Light and Darkness storyline reached its conclusion.

The debut of the “Destiny 2: The Last Chapter” expansion brought together Guardians worldwide to vanquish the Witness and conclude the narrative initiated by the original “Destiny” game in 2014. During its peak in June 2024, more than 310,000 players on Steam participated in “Destiny 2: The Last Chapter”. However, this large player base was not maintained over time, despite the later launch of Episode Revenant in October.

So far in December 2024, it seems that player engagement on Steam for Destiny 2 is at its lowest point in the game’s five-year history. The average number of players on the platform was approximately 24,826.5, a decrease of around 17% from November 2024’s average of 30,113.5 players. Moreover, the lowest peak player count ever recorded on Steam for Destiny 2 was experienced in December 2024, even lower than September 2024’s previous record-low peak of 41,373 players. However, keep in mind that the final average and peak player counts on SteamCharts have not yet been confirmed as there is still more than a week left in December. It’s possible that the player count could increase, but indications suggest that the decline may continue until the end of 2024, possibly due to negative feedback towards Destiny 2’s Episode Revenant and its non-craftable seasonal weapons.

Destiny 2 Steam Player Count Drops to All-Time Low in December 2024

  • Destiny 2 reaches an all-time low average player count of just 24,826.5 on Steam in December 2024.
  • The game also reached its lowest peak player count on Steam with 39,764 players.

The decrease in the number of Steam players for Destiny 2 might be due to several controversies that arose during Episode Revenant, such as technical problems experienced during Destiny 2’s Dawning 2024 event. These issues included malfunctioning cookies, guns not focusing as intended, and the temporary free availability of the Dawning event card before Bungie quickly fixed it to make it paid again. Additionally, many fans expressed their discontent and irritation over bugs impacting Crucible, Episode Revenant’s tonics, and other crucial gameplay elements in Destiny 2, which could potentially explain why some players decided not to come back to the game this month.

2024 saw a plethora of highly-rated video games that Destiny 2 enthusiasts might want to explore during the current gap in in-game content this festive season. Yet, it’s expected that Steam player numbers could surge once more when Bungie unveils Destiny 2 Episode Heresy and significant updates in 2025.
