Recently, The Edge of Fate event unfolded, offering gamers a sneak peek into Destiny 2’s upcoming trajectory for some time to come. As Bungie reveals, The Edge of Fate marks the beginning of an entirely new storyline, known as the Fate Saga, and it already appears to be a significant shift from previous events. This expansion is set to transport Guardians to the Solar System’s outer limits, where The Nine, a mysterious entity that had been absent during the chaotic years of the Light and Darkness Saga, will be reappearing.
In line with the significant transformation in the gameplay, Destiny 2 has undergone numerous alterations apart from its fresh setting. Several existing game mechanics are being revamped, resulting in a complete overhaul of the expansion model. Bungie aims to enhance the new player’s journey considerably, offering a lot of intriguing changes to explore.
The Edge of Fate Is Pushing Destiny 2’s Story the Furthest It’s Ever Gone
In the upcoming mission, “The Edge of Fate” will dispatch Guardians towards Kepler, a celestial body within the Oort Cloud, home to a perplexing singularity. Not much is clear about Kepler, but it shares a significant link with dark matter, a subject previously touched upon in Destiny’s narrative and now playing a crucial role in this expansion. Bungie has hinted that dimensions are less stable here, causing historical relics like an enormous warship and a school bus to occasionally appear on Kepler.
In the thrilling world of Destiny, it’s not like Guardians just stumbled upon Kepler; instead, we’ve been called there by The Nine – an enigmatic group with roots deeply embedded in the very fabric of dark matter. This cryptic collective has left their mark on Destiny’s history, orchestrating events such as the intriguing Dares of Eternity, and even aiding Ghaul during the Red War.
New and Returning Characters in the Edge of Fate
The storyline commenced as Orin, previously bound to The Nine but now reclaiming her autonomy as the Emissary, began sending enigmatic messages. This could signal early developments in the narrative, suggesting that The Nine might not be unanimous and allowing for Guardians to shape their own destinies. Additionally, some familiar faces may reappear, with Ikora confirmed, while hints of The Drifter are also present. A new character, Lodi, was introduced, who seems like a Guardian, although Bungie suggests he is from a far-off location.
The Fallen and Vex Will Make Up the Primary Enemies
Stepping back into the fold after a prolonged hiatus, I find myself drawn once more to the enigmatic Fallen House of Exile, now reborn with an updated appearance. This extraordinary faction, once believed lost following the emergence of the Scorn, has miraculously resurfaced on Kepler, armed with Strand and Stasis, and brandishing some formidable new firepower. It appears that these outcast Fallen have reemerged, stirring up trouble.
In addition to this, the Vex have established a stronghold on Kepler, delving into the mysteries of The Nine, transforming the planet in ways that eerily echo their cubic structures. Precursor Vex seem to be the dominant presence, hinting at more complex temporal machinations unfolding.
Kepler Uses Dark Matter Powers to Enhance Destiny 2’s Puzzle Solving
In the exploration of Kepler’s mysterious dark matter, Guardians will acquire two novel capabilities that revolutionize the approach to environmental challenges:
1. Mattermorph allows Guardians to manipulate their surroundings by merging Strand and dark matter, offering additional platforming possibilities.
2. Matterspark transforms the player into a ball of Arc energy, allowing them to bounce off surfaces while stunning enemies. Newly constructed tunnels on Kepler enable these Matterspark balls to solve intricate puzzles and traverse the alien environment more easily.
Bungie has designed these new abilities and environments to offer an engaging and challenging experience for Guardians as they delve deeper into the secrets of Kepler.
Armor 3.0 Is Going to Change Buildcrafting in Destiny 2
For several years now, Bungie has acknowledged that armor hasn’t been a significant concern among Destiny players. Despite the introduction of Artifice armor, activity bonuses, and mod overhauls, endgame players have had limited incentives to pursue new armor, primarily for aesthetic purposes as many already had optimized builds. On the other hand, the old armor 2.0 system posed a challenging grind for novice players to secure optimal rolls, which were unpredictable, and costly to upgrade with Masterwork.
In a new development, Armor 3.0 is making its way into Destiny 2, overhauling the existing system significantly. The stat structure has been fundamentally altered, with the old attributes like Strength, Discipline, and Intellect being replaced by more straightforward designations such as Melee, Grenade, and Super respectively. The revamped stats will be doled out in increments of 5 and 10, addressing the issue of unused stat points, and can potentially reach up to 200. Masterworking for maximum energy is no longer necessary, as armor from the same set now offers a bonus based on the number of pieces worn.
Bungie has announced that they’re upgrading exotic armor to a fresh system, though existing armor won’t receive the same treatment. This means that for now, there’s a focus on seasoned players acquiring new versions of their armor through grinding. For novice players, this modification will make armor management significantly easier, as it has often been a complicated issue in the past. This update aims to bring parity between newer and more experienced gamers.
Weapon and Armor Tiers Will Shake Up the Loot Chase
In the game Destiny 2, The Edge of Fate introduces a new rarity tier system for weapons and armor, with a total of five tiers. With weapon crafting now available in The Witch Queen, some non-craftable items have felt less desirable. Bungie hopes that this tier system will provide a fresh approach to revitalize the loot.
The rarity tiers increase based on the difficulty level of activities, granting better perks and stat distributions for weapons according to Bungie. The studio also asserts that these higher-tier items will be essential for tackling tougher activities. It’s intriguing that this change affects armor as well. Exactly what is meant by “better stat splits” remains unclear, but it seems that Bungie understands players often seek stat spikes in armor, and these may become more common in higher-tier armor.
Destiny 2’s Destination Screen Is Gone, and the Shooting Range Is Here
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia when I think back to the Season of Arrivals, when half the planets mysteriously vanished. And now, it seems that history is repeating itself, with planets being taken away once more, replaced by the enigmatic Portal. The Destinations tab, while fondly remembered, was often a source of confusion for many Guardians, and Bungie has decided to revamp it into a sleeker, more user-friendly interface that seamlessly guides us to our destinations. To top it all off, they’re introducing an exciting new feature – a shooting range where we can test out our weapons and abilities against a variety of opponents without having to repeatedly load the same Lost Sector.
Instead of “Where Final Shape was the culmination of everything that came before, The Edge of Fate should provide a fresh start.” Additionally, the upcoming year promises much excitement with The Edge of Fate serving as an attractive pull for returning players and potentially enticing newcomers to join in. With Bungie hinting at Renegades being a tribute to Star Wars within Destiny 2, the future of the franchise appears to be brimming with intrigue once more.
