Summary
- ZA/UM has announced a mobile port of their hit game Disco Elysium.
- Fans are already upset considering how many core team members have left the studio.
- The mobile port is adjusted to be optimized for short play sessions.
Although Disco Elysium is currently playable on systems such as the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck, a complete “revamp” of the game is now unveiled specifically for mobile devices.
Fans of Disco Elysium, the critically acclaimed CRPG, have found themselves disappointed by recent updates from ZA/UM, the game’s “original” creators. Although they hold the rights to a modern RPG masterpiece, the team now includes fewer members who worked on their flagship project.
More recent declarations, like the one for ZA/UM’s upcoming title Project C4, have sparked curiosity among players. However, after stating in a declaration, “we brought you Disco Elysium,” many enthusiasts have countered in the comments that the original team responsible for Disco Elysium is no longer associated with it.
Furthermore, previous team members aiming to preserve the essence of the original project have revealed plans for three distinct Disco-themed initiatives, each led by a different team. This serves as a reminder that the minds behind Disco are now spread across multiple entities.
Due to recent news about ZA/UM planning to release a mobile version of Disco Elysium on the Google Play Store next summer (2025), there’s been a great deal of puzzlement and bewilderment among fans.
Regardless of its initially appealing facade, both enthusiasts and experts have severely criticized ZA/UM for reusing their best work and likening it to brief, TikTok-style content.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but marvel at the triumph of indie games making their way onto mobile devices. Take Balatro, for instance, which has seen tremendous success in its transition to mobile platforms. Porting games like these not only opens up new opportunities for developers but also introduces unique gaming experiences to a whole new generation of players who might have otherwise missed out on enjoying them exclusively on consoles and PCs.

Why Bring Disco Elysium To Mobile?
According to a recent statement made by Denis Havel (the studio head) via IGN, the mobile version of Disco Elysium was developed with much the same rationale as other mobile adaptations.
Our aim is to hook the TikTok audience by delivering short bursts of intriguing narratives, visuals, and sounds. This results in a uniquely immersive and captivating experience that offers a fresh take on entertainment.
It seems that the mobile version of this game has been skillfully reinvented, offering vibrant character illustrations and innovative gameplay mechanics designed specifically for a unique mobile take on Disco’s thrilling detective adventure.
Even though the studio head mentioned that this new platform is meant to draw in TikTok users and considering the ongoing conflicts within ZA/UM’s studio, it seems that the typical Disco fan isn’t showing much enthusiasm, particularly for what appears to be an unnecessary mobile version of the game.
Disco Elysium is renowned for its extensive and intricate storyline, where players frequently make choices amidst an intricate plotline, featuring countless hours of voice acting and dialogue. Frankly, this doesn’t appear to be a game that would work seamlessly on a mobile platform.
Games with highly popular mobile adaptations, like Balatro and similar titles such as Roblox, Mario Kart Tour, and Bloons TD6, offer engaging gameplay structures that can be mastered during brief play sessions lasting just a few minutes.
It’s tough to envision extended Disco scenes involving autopsies and deep philosophical conversations with characters like Tommy Le Homme fitting well within a brief mobile gaming experience. Moreover, the recent update being marketed as “designed for quick play sessions” has left many of us curious about the modifications made and, more distressingly, what content might have been eliminated.
It’s tough to envision maintaining the same appeal of in-depth conversations in the game when adapting it for a new platform. Many fans share this sentiment, often questioning if this change is premature and reminiscent of an April Fool’s Day prank.
Primarily, what’s striking is that many fans no longer view ZA/UM as the authentic creators of Disco Elysium. Instead, they often comment that this port seems to stray far from the original vision, a product of the company who seized the intellectual property from its rightful originators.
It appears that ZA/UM continues to work at a rapid pace, and the question remains as to whether their forthcoming games will live up to the expectations set by their creators or not.
