This year, the popular social deduction game and internet sensation, “Among Us,” will unveil a 3D adaptation for PC gamers. Dubbed as “Among Us 3D,” this updated version of the beloved multiplayer game where crewmates collaborate to find impostors will now enable PC players to interact with “Among Us VR” players for the very first time. In a coinciding move, “Among Us VR” will be renamed “Among Us 3D.” The development of “Among Us 3D” was primarily handled by Schell Games in conjunction with Innersloth, the creators of the original 2D version.
At a gathering unveiling “Among Us 3D”, representatives from Schell Games had a conversation with Game Rant, which included project director Ryan Hall, lead producer Bryan Gardiner, and associate product marketing manager Adam Kuta. The Schell team shared the difficulties they encountered when transferring “Among Us 3D” to PC and offering the three-dimensional, first-person game version for players without a virtual reality headset. Although they were eagerly anticipating the release and looking forward to seeing both PC and VR users enjoying “Among Us 3D”, they acknowledged that their development process wasn’t devoid of obstacles.
The Greatest Challenge Was The Creation Of A HUD
In the PC version of Among Us 3D, players will have constant access to a user interface (UI), known as the Heads-Up Display or HUD. This interface provides essential details such as the player’s name, their role as either crewmate or impostor, a list of tasks to be completed for victory, and updates on recent dead bodies discovered and emergency meetings. Additionally, the HUD includes a mini-map, making it easier for players to move around the spaceship, planet, or other setting where they’re playing. Ryan Hall shared that the decision to include an HUD in Among Us 3D was made to enhance gameplay experience.
This type of display, reminiscent of what you find in first-person computer games, isn’t designed for virtual reality. However, it’s essential for personal computers.
Initially, when Schell Games began developing Among Us VR (released in 2022), they thought about incorporating a Heads-Up Display (HUD) similar to what’s planned for 3D. However, Hall and Gardiner found that such a display might be confusing for players during the frequent movements common in VR games, leading them to decide against it to prevent discomfort. Later on, this feature was reintroduced for Among Us 3D to align with typical design aspects of first-person PC games.
Among Us 3D Is A Big Step Forward For The Game
Despite facing hurdles like building a HUD, Innersloth and Schell are thrilled with how Among Us 3D has turned out. They believe it signifies a significant leap for the game after spending several years trying to keep up with the sudden fame of Among Us in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The team is also eager about upcoming plans for 3D, such as introducing new cosmetics, roles, and game modes, collaborations with other media properties, and more.
According to Victoria Tran, community director at Innersloth, “Among Us” is all about fostering connections. With the upcoming release of “Among Us 3D“, these connections can be forged in innovative ways as it will be compatible with various VR platforms like Steam, Meta Quest, Meta Quest 2, PICO 4, and others. The developers also aim to organize special events, some featuring collaborations, to motivate both PC and VR players to explore the world of “Among Us” together in a fresh new manner.
