So yeah, I’d say the first game truly deserved all the praise it gathered over the years, earning itself a stellar remake in 2002.
The Spencer Mansion serves as a chilling venue to investigate, its unnerving stillness frequently punctuated by the distant shuffling and groans of surrounding undead. Occasionally, the silence can be deafening, causing even the faintest sounds to stand out sharply. The upgraded visuals in the remake amplify the terror, as everything appears more lifelike and immersive. At times, the air of dread becomes almost unbearable for the player, casting a heavy psychological burden. Moreover, there are poignant reminders of human suffering, like Lisa Trevor’s plight, suggesting that humans may be the real monsters in this tale.

In the dimly lit world of Revelations, fleeting glimpses of creatures and an oppressive atmosphere turned my journey into something reminiscent of a contemporary psychological horror adventure, which surprisingly enhanced the game’s appeal. This eerie tone was amplified further by the boss character, Scagdead (or the communications officer), who despite transforming into a beast, still pleaded for help from his human half while trying to dismember me with his massive buzzsaw arm.

House Beneviento Fully Embraces Psychological Horror
Even though Village appears to alleviate some of the psychological terror from its previous version, players may find themselves caught off guard when they encounter the second of the Four Lords, Donna Beneviento. Unlike her fellow three, she’s not primarily a combatant; instead, she uses the hallucinogenic properties of the plants around her estate to get rid of intruders like Ethan Winters. Unfortunately for Ethan, he too succumbs to these hallucinations.
In the underground part of her home, the game Resident Evil Village disarms Ethan and delves deeply into psychological terror. Puzzles become crucial from the get-go, like the mannequin resembling Mia on the table, followed by the well-known colossal fetus creature that pursues Ethan all the way to the exit. It’s clear what these hallucinations symbolize, as Ethan is frantically searching for his daughter who has been split into four pieces.

The Opening Hour Features One Of The Scariest Sequences In All Of Gaming History
In a long-anticipated move, Resident Evil 7 marked a return to the series’ traditional style, despite the innovative efforts in Revelations that left fans yearning for more since the significant shifts in RE5 and RE6. The game introduces a new protagonist, Ethan Winters, who embarks on a complex quest to find his missing wife. His journey takes him deep into the swamps of Louisiana where he encounters the menacing Baker family, his captors.
Entering Baker mansion is tense, particularly because it’s so dark inside, which amplifies the player’s fear. They understand they aren’t in a secure place since this is Resident Evil, and the encounter with Mia is one of the scariest moments in the game as a whole. The eerie image and sound of her climbing up the pitch-black staircase create an extended, suspenseful moment that intensifies tension more effectively than a loud, abrupt jump scare would. The chase between Jack continues to heighten the fear, making players feel genuinely exposed.
