Dogecoin (DOGE) Founder Reacts to Kabosu Passing Away

As a crypto investor and long-time follower of the meme coin scene, I’m deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Kabosu, the beloved Shiba Inu dog who served as the mascot for Dogecoin. Her impact on the meme coin community cannot be overstated, and her influence on the creators of Dogecoin, Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer, was immeasurable.

Billy Markus, a software developer who teamed up with Jackson Palmer in 2013 to launch the first-ever meme cryptocurrency, Dogecoin, mourned the loss of Kabosu, the iconic Shiba Inu dog featured in many Dogecoin memes, on X platform after she passed away on Friday.

DOGE founder comments on Kabosu’s passing

As a crypto investor looking back at the past, I can’t help but recall the amusing origin story of Dogecoin. In the early days of 2010, an adorable Shiba Inu dog named Kabosu gained massive popularity online and became a meme. This infectious trend inspired the creators of Dogecoin to adopt this lovable canine as their project’s mascot.

Markus, commonly referred to as Shibetoshi Nakamoto on X, penned a thought-provoking post featuring Kabosu engaging in conversation with Death. In this intriguing exchange, Kabosu queries Death about her assessment of her past actions, to which Death responds with great praise: “You were not just good, but the very best.”

The online meme community rallied behind Markus, generating a wave of memes featuring Kabosu and her encounter with the late Harambe, the gorilla who gained meme status following his tragic passing in 2016.

On Friday in Japan, the 19-year-old Kabosu breathed her last. Atsuko Sato, her devoted owner, announced this tragic news on her blog. The Dogecoin community was informed of the loss through a post shared by the official Dogecoin account on X.

Elon Musk’s impact on DOGE

Elon Musk, a significant backer of Dogecoin, honored Kabosu with a tweet on Friday. Dogecoin and Shiba Inu, another widely-used meme coin, briefly surged in response to Musk’s post. Musk expressed that Kabosu had joined Harambe, the Internet sensation gorilla, in the afterlife. In 2016, Harambe became a viral meme following an incident where a zoo worker was compelled to euthanize the gorilla after a child entered its enclosure.

Over the past 7-8 years, DOGE, which started out as a humorous take on Bitcoin (using BTC‘s code in its creation), has gained significant attention. Notably, Elon Musk’s involvement and promotion of the meme coin transformed it from a simple internet joke into a legitimate digital currency. This shift allowed for wider adoption as a payment method.

Markus and Musk frequently engage in discussions about X. Nakamoto of Shibetoshi is a consistent supporter of the X community and its leader’s efforts to evolve Twitter into an all-encompassing “everything app” X. Notably, the incorporation of the Grok AI chatbot into this project is among their initiatives.
