As a researcher with a keen interest in the evolution of cryptocurrencies, I find Billy Markus, or Shibetoshi Nakamoto as he is fondly known, to be an intriguing figure in this rapidly evolving digital landscape. His life experience, marked by the creation of Dogecoin and his brief foray into other projects like Bells, offers a unique perspective on the early days of cryptocurrency development.
Billy Markus, famously known as “Shibetoshi Nakamoto” (a humorous nod to the Bitcoin founder’s pseudonym) and creator of the popular meme-based cryptocurrency Dogecoin, has expressed through the X platform that he has no plans to engage in any other cryptocurrency project in the future.
Additionally, he disclosed the initial currency he developed prior to creating DOGE, and criticized Ethereum-related coins, stating that their inventors assert they were created in 2013.
“I will never create any cryptocurrency” again: Billy Markus
This afternoon, Markus shared a tweet to explain his past involvement with Dogecoin and another unsuccessful cryptocurrency, emphasizing that he has no intention of creating any new cryptocurrencies in the future, particularly meme coins.
I just want to make it clear that I haven’t developed any cryptocurrency besides Dogecoin in 2013 (and Bell coins before that), haven’t been involved with any cryptocurrency projects since 2014, and have no intentions of working on or creating any cryptocurrencies from then on. Any claims suggesting my affiliation are false.

In simpler terms, Shibetoshi Nakamoto emphasized that he’s only ever created two digital currencies – Dogecoin and something called Bells before that. After the launch of Dogecoin in 2013, when he and fellow founder Jackson Palmer stepped away from the project, he has had no further involvement with any cryptocurrency.
i wouldn’t create another meme coin

As a researcher, I want to clarify my stance on cryptocurrencies. I unequivocally state that I will neither develop nor contribute to any cryptocurrency projects in the future. Any claims suggesting my involvement with a cryptocurrency project are misleading and dishonest to the crypto community.
Bells coin by Dogecoin creator
Regarding the Bell token, Markus elaborated further in the comments, responding to an X user. He stated that he had written the code for the Bell cryptocurrency prior to proposing collaboration with Palmer on DOGE.
According to him, the present Bells project operates on the Ethereum network, and it’s important to note that this newer version of the Bells token is essentially a reincarnation, as the original blockchain has been erased and a new one has been initiated by others.
“The new one isn’t my project, it was just based on code i made 11 years ago,” he stressed.
I’m afraid the token you’re referring to isn’t something I created. Actually, Ethereum wasn’t around until much later, in 2015. The cryptocurrency I attempted to create back in 2013, a Scrypt coin, didn’t last long. However, it was revived by others only recently.

Markus emphasized that although certain creators of Ethereum-based tokens assert they introduced their cryptocurrency in 2013, this statement is clearly false, as Ethereum was not developed until the year 2015, according to him.
When asked if he was the one who invented Bitcoin, Markus playfully replied, “Yes, and I also invented the internet and oxygen.” (In this paraphrase, I’ve used a more conversational tone to make it sound natural and easy to read.)
