Donkey Kong Bananza: 6 Confirmed Features Set to Shred Switch 2!

In 1981, when Donkey Kong made its debut in arcades, it became Nintendo’s initial major success. Initially, the large ape was primarily a nemesis to Mario, but he got his chance to shine on the SNES in 1994 with the introduction of Donkey Kong Country. Alongside his cousin Diddy Kong, Donkey Kong eventually received his own platformer series. His first foray into 3D gaming was on the N64 in 1999 through Donkey Kong 64.

Ever since, no other 3D Donkey Kong adventure has followed. However, that is set to change with the Switch 2 and its game, Donkey Kong Bananza. When it initially launched on the Switch in 2017, it appeared to be a thrilling adventure reminiscent of Super Mario Odyssey. Let’s delve into what we can gather from the most recent Donkey Kong Bananza trailer.

6. The Release Date And Price

A Better Launch Game?

Donkey Kong Bananza won’t debut as the launch game for the Switch 2 on June 5th. However, fans won’t have to wait too long as it’s scheduled for release on July 17th, which is approximately a month later. The price of this game will be $70, higher than most Switch games that have been priced at $60 throughout its lifetime.

As a dedicated fan, I must admit that when it comes to Nintendo games, we’re accustomed to them being on the pricier side and seldom seeing discounts. However, the upcoming release of “Mario Kart World” for the Switch 2 seems to be setting its price at $80, which might stretch the budget for some enthusiasts like myself. Nonetheless, I’m confident that “Donkey Kong Bananza,” set to launch in 2025, will undoubtedly stand out as the most exciting new platformer for the Switch 2, promising an unforgettable gaming experience.

5. Punch Through Rocks And The Ground

Move Over Shovel Knight

Over the years, there have been numerous digging-themed games, and among them, Shovel Knight Dig stands out for Nintendo Switch. Unlike Shovel Knight who needed a shovel, Donkey Kong is shown in the trailer using his fists to break through the earth. The trailer suggests that not only can he dig underground at an incredible speed but also leap above ground with ease.

I must admit, the trailer and Nintendo’s website hint at something truly spectacular – our hero, Donkey Kong, seems to be tearing through rock structures as if he’s an unstoppable ape-tornado of demolition! It appears that no game from Nintendo has ever showcased such destructive power before, offering a glimpse into the potential capabilities of the Switch 2. Reminds me a bit of “Red Faction: Guerrilla,” which is quite amusing considering the name. If only Donkey Kong could handle a shotgun too!

4. What’s The Plot?

Void Out VoidCo

It appears that viewers may have noticed three large ape characters in the trailer who seem to be leaders, or bosses. Among them is a towering figure with red hair, a small one, and a female one. Although their specific names are undisclosed, they are collectively known as VoidCo. These banana thieves made off with Donkey Kong’s bananas and then retreated to hide underground.

In the thrilling world of Super Mario Odyssey, I found myself engaged in epic battles against some fascinating foes – the Broodals and even Bowser himself! Although Nintendo hasn’t officially confirmed it yet, fellow fans and I are pretty sure there will be more boss fights ahead. As for VoidCo members, we can only hope that there will be more than just three of them lurking in the shadows. However, if not, Donkey Kong still has a plethora of formidable enemies to keep him on his toes!

3. That Thing On His Back Is Sentient

Is This The New Cappy?

In the game ‘Donkey Kong Bananza’, as depicted on Nintendo’s website, Donkey Kong acquires a new companion – a mysterious creature they call VoidCo who rides on his back. Interestingly, this character doesn’t seem to have a specific name mentioned. Similarly, in ‘Super Mario Odyssey’, Mario gains a sentient ally named Cappy, a spirit residing within his hat.

In the game “Donkey Kong Bananza”, is it possible that the purple rock functions like a possessed entity, granting Donkey Kong special abilities? It’s uncertain if this purple entity shares any connection with Cappy, but for now, let’s save such theories for later discussions. However, it’s worth noting that Donkey Kong isn’t solely dependent on the purple rock as his companion. In one part of the trailer, he seems to converse with an ostrich, possibly referring to Expresso. As a mount introduced in “Donkey Kong Country”, it’s intriguing to speculate if Expresso might assume a different role this time around.

2. Cruise Around The Underground In Style

We Love Mine Carts Don’t We Folks?

Fans adored “Donkey Kong Country” on the SNES, yet they found it challenging at times. The most difficult parts were undeniably the mine cart sections. In tribute to its platforming roots, it seems that mine carts will reappear in “Donkey Kong Bananza,” but let’s hope that navigating them won’t lead to as many exasperating situations.

Apart from riding mine carts, Donkey Kong has the knack for picking up stones, gliding along them as if on a skateboard. He’s also capable of rolling and showcases an impressive skill set with his ability to climb. What sets him apart is his unique talent to dive into the ground, whether from small or considerable heights, and swiftly navigate through it. In essence, this rendition of Donkey Kong appears more akin to The Hulk than just a typical jungle ape.

1. The Presentation

From Environments To Perspectives

Although Donkey Kong is returning to his underground lair, it doesn’t imply his world will be shrouded in gloom. The teaser showcases various settings ranging from conventional mine tunnels to blooming meadows to frosty peaks. It remains a mystery whether the game will offer an entirely open-world experience like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, or only include open hubs similar to Super Mario Odyssey.

It’s clear that the game will feature shifts in perspective, similar to when Donkey Kong transitions into 2D. There are also barrels for jumping into, much like in the Donkey Kong Country series. So, one might wonder what other surprises the game has in store during its official launch.
