Before we even had Super Saiyan, the Kaioken was seriously Goku’s ultimate move in Dragon Ball Z! King Kai created it, but it was so intense, he couldn’t even fully control it himself – talk about a powerful technique! It took Goku dying and training with King Kai to find someone strong and dedicated enough to use the Kaioken without completely wrecking their body. And honestly, it’s different from other transformations because it really pushes you to your limit – there are some serious downsides!
As a huge Dragon Ball fan, I’ve always been fascinated by the Kaioken! It’s an incredible technique that can massively boost your power, depending on how much you push it. But here’s the thing – it’s really dangerous. Throughout Dragon Ball Z, Goku walks a fine line with it, almost crippling himself a few times! Then, in Dragon Ball Super, he takes it even further and actually gets sick – it’s called Delayed Onset Ki Disorder! Honestly, when used right, the Kaioken is one of the most powerful transformations in the whole series, but you have to be so careful, or it could literally kill you. It’s a high-risk, high-reward move that always keeps me on the edge of my seat!
10. Regular Kaioken Greatly Increases Goku’s Power Level at the Cost of Damaging His Body
When Goku is killed by Raditz, Kami lets his spirit keep its body so he can journey along Snake Way. This allows him to train with King Kai in preparation for the upcoming fight against Nappa and Vegeta. During this training, Goku masters the Kaioken, a special ability that dramatically increases his strength and power.
The Kaioken technique is notoriously difficult to learn. Despite training with King Kai, characters like Tien, Yamcha, Chiaotzu, and Piccolo haven’t been able to master it. Goku is the only one in Dragon Ball who can actually use the Kaioken. Originally, it was described as doubling Goku’s strength, but the existence of Kaioken x2 suggests the actual power boost is likely between 1.1 and 1.9 times his normal level, with most fans believing it’s around 1.5x.
9. Kaioken x2 Doubles Goku’s Power Level
It’s unclear if Kaioken x2 is a real technique. During his fight with Vegeta, simply using the Kaioken wasn’t enough for Goku to significantly increase his power. Feeling desperate, Goku announces he’s using Kaioken x2, even though King Kai had warned him not to go beyond double the usual power.
Some fans think Goku using Kaioken times two was a mistake. They reason that since Kaioken already doubles a fighter’s power, multiplying it by two again shouldn’t have any extra effect. However, the original Dragon Ball manga actually shows Goku performing a little better against Vegeta when he uses Kaioken x2 compared to just the regular Kaioken.
8. Kaioken x3 Gave Goku the Power To Dominate Vegeta
During the Saiyan Saga, Vegeta’s power level is 18,000. When Goku uses the Kaioken technique, multiplying his base power of 8,000 by three, he exceeds Vegeta’s strength, reaching a power level of 24,000. With Kaioken x3, Goku dominates the fight, landing strong hits that begin to exhaust both him and Vegeta.
Goku initially hurts Vegeta badly, but using Kaioken x3 puts a huge strain on his body. King Kai had cautioned him against using Kaioken beyond double strength, warning it could be fatal. Despite this, and even though Kaioken x3 gives him a significant advantage, Vegeta is a strong enough opponent that Goku feels forced to increase the power to Kaioken x4 during their intense energy beam clash.
7. Kaioken x4 Nearly Killed Vegeta in the Saiyan Saga
Near the end of their intense battle, Goku uses the Kaioken technique, boosting his power fourfold, during a clash of energy beams with Vegeta. As his body reaches its limit, Goku fires a Kamehameha so powerful it almost defeats Vegeta, countering Vegeta’s Galick Gun. Though Goku’s power level reaches an incredible 32,000, far surpassing Vegeta’s, he still isn’t able to deliver a finishing blow.
Goku unleashes a powerful Kamehameha wave that sends Vegeta soaring, causing significant damage. However, Vegeta manages to escape before the attack can be fatal. Goku is completely drained after using Kaioken x4, so much so that even a gentle tap from Yajirobe causes him to flinch in pain.
6. Kaioken x10 Was Goku’s Strongest Form For Most of His Fight With Frieza
After his tough fight with Vegeta, Goku spends the six days traveling to Namek training by increasing the gravity around him. He unknowingly pushes his body to its limits multiple times, which causes his power level to increase dramatically. Later, after fighting Captain Ginyu and receiving another power boost, Goku becomes strong enough to use Kaioken ten times over.
I’m always amazed by how effortlessly Goku uses the Kaioken against Frieza – it’s become so second nature that even Tien doesn’t notice he’s using it! But honestly, even with Kaioken x10, Frieza is just on another level. It only manages to keep Goku in the fight, barely.
5. Kaioken x20 Was Goku’s First Trump Card Before Unlocking Super Saiyan
By the time Goku fights Frieza, he’s become strong enough that using the Kaioken technique twenty times over doesn’t cause lasting damage. However, he only uses this powerful form when Frieza pushes him to his absolute limit. Even then, with Kaioken multiplied by twenty, Goku can only barely keep up with Frieza while Frieza is only using half of his full power.
Goku held onto Kaioken x20 as a powerful attack to use against Frieza, but even at that level, he couldn’t defeat him. After using Kaioken x20, Goku was completely drained of energy and desperately tried the Spirit Bomb, which also didn’t work. If Krillin hadn’t been killed, triggering Goku’s transformation into a Super Saiyan, Goku would have remained limited to Kaioken x20 and ultimately failed.
4. Kaioken x100 Made Goku Stronger Than a Super Saiyan in DBZ Movie 4
Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug is the fourth DBZ movie and presents an alternate timeline where Goku defeats Frieza without becoming a Super Saiyan—possibly by using a more powerful Spirit Bomb. The film is notable for introducing a form that looks similar to Super Saiyan, just days before Akira Toriyama officially revealed the true Super Saiyan transformation in the Dragon Ball manga.
Goku’s initial attempts to defeat Lord Slug as a Pseudo Super Saiyan aren’t successful, so he uses Kaioken x100 – a powerful, but non-official, technique. Surprisingly, this makes Goku even stronger than his Super Saiyan form, as Kaioken x100 multiplies his power by 100, while Super Saiyan only multiplies it by 50. However, using Kaioken x100 puts an immense strain on Goku’s body, which is why he typically only uses it up to a level of x20 in the main storyline.
3. Super Saiyan Kaioken Goku Could Have Killed Cell
During a non-official battle in Dragon Ball Z, Goku combines the Kaioken technique with his Super Saiyan form against Pikkon. This combination, often called Super Saiyan Kaioken, is incredibly powerful. It effectively doubles Goku’s power while he’s already boosted 50 times over in Super Saiyan, resulting in a 100x increase – the same level of power as Super Saiyan 2.
Although never shown in the main Dragon Ball Z story, filler episodes suggest Goku could have defeated Super Perfect Cell on his own if he’d combined the Super Saiyan and Kaioken forms. This is based on a depiction of Goku being as strong as Pikkon, who easily surpassed Cell in the Other World Tournament. However, this idea clashes with the series’ overall theme of each new generation being stronger, and it undermines the importance of Goku allowing Gohan to defeat Cell and become the next protector.
2. Super Saiyan 4 Kaioken is an Exclusive Form for Xeno Gogeta
Only characters other than Goku can use Super Saiyan 4 Kaioken. Xeno Gogeta is an incredibly strong version of Gogeta from a timeline similar to Dragon Ball GT, though with some differences—Xeno Goku is still alive and grown up. Unlike the standard Gogeta, Xeno Gogeta can’t use God Ki. Instead, he relies on an extremely powerful Super Saiyan 4 form and can combine it with Kaioken for even greater strength.
Xeno Gogeta is an incredibly strong fighter, and his Super Saiyan 4 Kaioken form makes him even more powerful. In the Dragon Ball Heroes game, this version of Xeno Gogeta would be stronger than Goku in his Perfected Ultra Instinct form, all without needing to use divine energy. While not as powerful, Super Saiyan 4 Goku in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 can combine the Kaioken technique (up to 20x) with his Super Saiyan 4 transformation while using the Kamehameha, resulting in a huge increase in power.
1. Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken is the Most Powerful Version of Kaioken – & Most Dangerous
Xeno Gogeta is more powerful than the standard version of Goku, but Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken is a significantly stronger transformation than Super Saiyan 4 Kaioken. Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken combines a Saiyan’s energy with God Ki, amplified by the already powerful Kaioken technique. In the Dragon Ball Super anime, Goku uses Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken x10 to gain the upper hand against Hit during the Universe 6 Tournament. In the manga, Goku attempts to use Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken to match Jiren’s immense power before Master Roshi helps him achieve Ultra Instinct.
Using Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken puts incredible stress on Goku’s body, initially causing a long-term energy-related illness. However, by the Tournament of Power, Goku gains better control over his energy, allowing him to use Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken x20 repeatedly without getting sick. At its peak, this form’s power was comparable to Vegeta’s evolved Super Saiyan Blue, making it one of the strongest transformations in the Dragon Ball series.
