Goku, the central character in Dragon Ball, constantly strives to become more powerful, but he isn’t always the strongest. In fact, with the release of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, he’s no longer even the strongest Saiyan. The official Dragon Ball story includes the original Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Super manga created by Akira Toriyama, but the broader Dragon Ball universe has expanded significantly, mirroring Goku’s own growth.
With so many different versions of Goku appearing in Akira Toriyama’s original manga, the animated series, movies, and spin-offs like Dragon Ball GT, Dragon Ball DAIMA, and Super Dragon Ball Heroes, it’s no surprise that each new Goku is more powerful than the last. The strongest versions are unbelievably powerful, capable of destroying entire universes within the Dragon Ball world.
8. DAIMA Goku’s Power Level is Held Back By His Timeline Placement
Dragon Ball DAIMA
Dragon Ball DAIMA is a standout anime in the Dragon Ball series and represents the final creative work of Akira Toriyama. Despite being reverted to a child, Goku quickly regains his power and accesses his Super Saiyan transformations, even achieving Super Saiyan 4 during his fight with Gomah. The series suggests that Goku’s strength surpassed even that of Majin Buu by the end of Dragon Ball Z.
The main drawback of DAIMA Goku is that the Dragon Ball DAIMA anime is set much earlier in the Dragon Ball timeline—just one year after Dragon Ball Z ended. While he’s become stronger since fighting Kid Buu, he isn’t nearly as powerful as versions of Goku seen in Dragon Ball GT, Dragon Ball Super, and particularly Super Dragon Ball Heroes.
7. GT Goku is So Much Stronger Than He Looks
Dragon Ball GT
Fans often joke that “GT” in Dragon Ball GT really means “Goku Time,” and for good reason. This sequel to Dragon Ball Z picks up five years later, and Goku is even more powerful than before. His Super Saiyan 4 form makes him one of the strongest characters in the series, and he usually wins battles all on his own.
When spin-off series like Dragon Ball Heroes include GT Goku, his Super Saiyan 4 form is often powerful enough to fight equally with Goku’s God forms. Similar to DAIMA Goku, being turned into a child doesn’t significantly weaken him; he quickly becomes strong enough to defeat opponents more powerful than Super Buu during the Baby Saga. Back in the 90s, GT Goku was considered the absolute strongest version of the character. However, with the introduction of newer, even more powerful versions of Goku in Dragon Ball Super, he no longer ranks as the most powerful.
6. Goku Black Different Ki Types Make Him One of the Series’ Most Dangerous Villains
Dragon Ball Super Anime & Manga
Goku Black is a future version of Goku whose body was taken over by Zamasu. This happened in a timeline where the Tournament of Destroyers played out differently. His strength changes a bit between the manga and anime versions of Dragon Ball Super, but by the end of the story, he’s powerful enough to battle Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta even without much training.
Goku Black’s incredible power comes from his unusual combination of energy types. He can use the natural Saiyan energy of Goku, the divine energy of Zamasu, and even God Ki. Taking over Goku’s body also gives him a fresh start biologically, letting him rapidly increase his strength through Zenkai boosts – becoming even stronger than Goku in his original timeline. This allows him to achieve Super Saiyan Rosé, which is a bit more powerful than the standard Super Saiyan Blue form.
5. Toei Goku Pulls Off Feats in the Anime He Never Could in the Original Manga
Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, & Dragon Ball Super Anime + Movies
The version of Goku seen in the original Dragon Ball anime, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Super, and the various movies—both official and unofficial—is incredibly powerful. The anime frequently makes Goku even stronger than he is in the manga, particularly in Dragon Ball Z. While Ultimate Gohan and Majin Buu are definitively stronger than Goku at the end of the Dragon Ball manga, the anime boosts Goku’s power to make him the strongest character in the universe by the final battle of Dragon Ball Z.
The difference in power levels between the anime and manga versions of Goku continues in Dragon Ball Super. In the Tournament of Power arc of the anime, Ultra Instinct Goku is strong enough to defeat Jiren through physical strength, while the manga shows Jiren as the stronger fighter. Currently, the anime version of Goku is less powerful simply because the anime has only covered the Universe Survival Saga. However, once the Dragon Ball Super anime remake reaches the Moro arc and the Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol anime is released, the anime version of Goku will likely surpass the manga version in power.
4. The Crimson-Masked Saiyan Killed 99 Versions of Goku From Different Timelines
Super Dragon Ball Heroes
The Crimson-Masked Saiyan is a version of Goku Black from Super Dragon Ball Heroes. He learned from Fu, a very powerful demon in Dragon Ball, that he was going to be defeated. To prevent this, Fu gave him a special Time Breaker Mask that significantly increased his power. Driven by this knowledge, the Crimson-Masked Saiyan dedicated himself to traveling across different universes and eliminating every version of Goku he could find.
During his travels through time, the Crimson-Masked Saiyan defeated 99 versions of Goku from different realities, even one who had mastered Ultra Instinct. He’s incredibly powerful, on par with those who’ve achieved Ultra Instinct. He can also transform into a unique form called Super Saiyan Rosé 3, making him as strong as Goku when he’s perfected Ultra Instinct. Ultimately, it took the combined power of Goku and Vegeta fusing into Gogeta to finally defeat him.
3. Xeno Goku is One of the Most Overpowered Characters in the Franchise
Super Dragon Ball Heroes
Xeno Goku is the main version of Goku in the series Super Dragon Ball Heroes. We don’t know much about his past, but his ability to transform into a Super Saiyan 4 suggests a connection to Dragon Ball GT. However, it seems the events of Dragon Ball GT didn’t happen in his universe, as he’s still alive and an adult.
Xeno Goku, in his strongest form, is only a little less powerful than Goku with Perfected Ultra Instinct. He’s a Time Patroller from his own timeline, working to repair problems throughout the multiverse. Xeno Goku has battled some of the fiercest enemies in the entire Dragon Ball series, including defeating Demigra. While he can’t use God Ki, his incredible natural power seems to make up for it.
2. Canon Goku is Growing Stornger With Each Saga
Dragon Ball & Dragon Ball Super Manga
Goku, the main character from Akira Toriyama and Toyotarou’s Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Super manga, has grown tremendously since he was a child searching for the Dragon Balls. He began with a power level only twice that of a normal person, but now he’s one of the most powerful fighters in existence. While mastering Ultra Instinct in the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga has made him nearly unbeatable, Dragon Ball Super consistently reminds us that he’s not flawless and can still be challenged.
At the end of the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero storyline, Goku isn’t as powerful as Vegeta or Gohan. However, he’s happy about this! He’s excited that his son, Gohan, has once again exceeded his strength, and he always wants a strong opponent like Vegeta to push him to become even stronger. Once the manga continues with the Black Frieza Saga, Goku, with his mastered Ultra Instinct, will probably get even more powerful.
1. Capsule Corp Goku is the Strongest Goku After Experiencing Almost Every Anime & Movie In His Timeline
Super Dragon Ball Heroes
I’ve encountered another version of Goku from Super Dragon Ball Heroes, but this one is different from the Xeno Goku. This Goku comes from a timeline where everything happened pretty much as we know it – he lived through all of Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Super, and even the events of Dragon Ball Super: Broly.
Capsule Corp Goku is incredibly strong, likely capable of defeating any opponent within the official Dragon Ball story. He has mastered Perfected Ultra Instinct and even defeated the most powerful version of Goku from another universe. Other versions of Goku simply don’t measure up to his power level, and even the main timeline Goku would struggle to reach his strength.
