Goku and Vegeta are incredibly powerful, but Dragon Ball Super consistently demonstrates that even they aren’t the absolute strongest. Whenever they achieve a new level of strength, they usually encounter even more powerful opponents who remind them they still have room to grow.
Goku and Vegeta have become incredibly powerful, nearing the level of a God like Beerus with each new story arc. However, even with their divine energy, they aren’t necessarily the strongest beings in the universe. In fact, they need this divine power just to compete with other exceptionally strong characters in Dragon Ball. Fighters like Broly, Frieza, and Jiren naturally possess more raw power than Goku and Vegeta, and they don’t rely on powerful transformations to stay competitive – or even win.
6. Jiren Was Never Actually Defeated in the Tournament of Power
Jiren is consistently ranked among the strongest characters in the entire Dragon Ball series. Goku wasn’t able to defeat him during the Tournament of Power, and even in later stories like Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Goku still measures his own strength against Jiren’s. Interestingly, Jiren is even more powerful in the Dragon Ball Super manga, where he defeats Goku even while Goku is using Ultra Instinct, and is only defeated when Frieza unexpectedly attacks him.
Goku has become more powerful since the Universe Survival Saga, but Jiren has improved too. He was already the strongest in Universe 11, even stronger than his God of Destruction, Belmod, during the Tournament of Power. While Goku’s Ultra Instinct and Vegeta’s Ultra Ego would be a tough challenge for Jiren, he’s capable of adapting to his opponents’ increasing strength, meaning he could likely overcome even their most powerful forms.
5. Cell Max is Implied to Be Stronger Than Goku & Vegeta
In Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Piccolo worries that even Goku and Vegeta might not be strong enough to beat Cell Max. This is surprising because Goku had already achieved his perfected Ultra Instinct form when Piccolo last saw him during the fight with Moro. Gohan’s new Beast form only manages to defeat Cell Max with a desperate Special Beam Cannon attack, and he needs help from Orange Piccolo, Fat Gotenks, and the Gamma brothers to do it.
I’ve been following the Dragon Ball Super manga, and something really struck me. Gohan Beast had a tough fight against Cell Max, but then easily knocked out Goku, who was in his Perfected Ultra Instinct form. That really suggests Cell Max would be a serious problem – maybe even too much – for both Goku and Vegeta, even with their strongest transformations. And it’s important to remember Cell Max wasn’t even at his full power in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. If he’d achieved his perfect form, I doubt even Gohan Beast could have stood against him.
4. Gas Was Going to Beat Goku & Vegeta Before Frieza Showed Up
Gas is a remarkably strong character in Dragon Ball who doesn’t rely on or even use God Ki. During the Granolah the Survivor Saga, his brother Elec wishes upon the Cerealian Dragon Balls to make Gas the strongest fighter in Universe 7. Whenever an opponent gains the upper hand, Gas immediately ages up to a point where his natural power exceeds theirs. By the saga’s conclusion, Awakened Gas nearly defeats Granolah, Goku, and Vegeta.
The heroes can only hope to compete with Gas by combining their strengths and trying to be cleverer than him, but Gas quickly adjusts to anything they throw his way. Elec’s wish on the Dragon Balls made Gas incredibly powerful, even granting him access to devastating techniques like Hakai, normally reserved for Gods of Destruction. Ultimately, Gas is defeated because Frieza wasn’t present in Universe 7 when the wish was made, preventing Gas from adapting to Frieza’s Black Form.
3. Broly Was So Strong, Goku & Vegeta Needed to Fuse Into Gogeta To Beat Him
When it comes to raw power, Broly is potentially the strongest character in Dragon Ball Super. He was born with an incredibly high Power Level of 10,000, which led King Vegeta to banish him to the planet Vampa. Despite this, Broly continued to grow stronger. Remarkably, even without any training, his base form is powerful enough to fight on equal footing with Super Saiyan God Goku and Vegeta, two highly skilled fighters who have spent their lives mastering martial arts and God Ki.
When Broly transforms into a Super Saiyan, his power level skyrockets, forcing Goku and Vegeta to use their Super Saiyan Blue forms just to compete. In his Legendary Super Saiyan state, he’s incredibly powerful, and only Gogeta – a fusion with god-like strength – can even challenge him. Even then, Gogeta needs to use Super Saiyan Blue to secure the victory. Before gaining the power of a god, Broly easily defeated both Goku and Vegeta and was a legitimate threat to Gogeta. This demonstrates an astonishing level of strength, making it one of the most impressive power displays in the entire Dragon Ball series.
2. Gohan Already Beat Goku, He Can Beat Vegeta
Following his victory over Cell Max in the Dragon Ball Super manga, Gohan travels to Beerus’ Planet to practice with his father. The resulting fight between Gohan Beast and Goku in his Perfected Ultra Instinct form is considered one of the best in the series, definitively showing that Gohan Beast is significantly stronger than Perfected Ultra Instinct Goku. During the battle, Gohan Beast manages to overwhelm Goku, forcing him out of his Perfected Ultra Instinct state.
Gohan, in his Beast form, easily handles Broly and even briefly fights a powerful Vegeta before Goten and Trunks join in a chaotic Super Saiyan battle. While the fight itself isn’t shown, the story strongly suggests Gohan wins against both Goku and Vegeta, emerging with barely a scratch. Importantly, Gohan’s Beast form isn’t a divine power – it’s simply him reaching his absolute peak potential, exceeding even his father’s strength.
1. Black Frieza Defeated Ultra Instinct Goku & Ultra Ego Vegeta On-Screen
Frieza is now the most powerful character in the Dragon Ball universe who isn’t a god. After his defeat in the Dragon Ball Super: Broly movie, he leaves his universe and starts traveling through others. During his travels, he finds a special room that allows him to train for ten years. Over this unseen period, Frieza achieves a new form called Black Frieza, which is significantly more powerful than any of his previous forms and makes him the strongest character in the series.
Black Frieza is overwhelmingly powerful. He instantly defeated Awakened Gas with one blow, and then quickly overcame both Ultra Instinct Goku and Ultra Ego Vegeta before they could even respond. Goku and Vegeta barely survived their encounter with him and have been constantly training ever since, desperately trying to bridge the gap between themselves and the strongest being in the entire multiverse.
