Dungeons & Dragons now offers new character choices that are only available to players who subscribe to D&D Beyond, and many feel these options are more powerful than those found in traditional rulebooks. These new additions are part of “D&D Beyond Drops,” a new benefits program launched by Wizards of the Coast on May 7th.
I remember when D&D Beyond first came out – it was such a cool idea! It started as an unofficial app, but officially licensed, to help us manage our Dungeons & Dragons games online. Then, in 2022, Hasbro bought them, which meant Wizards of the Coast was directly behind it. Since then, they’ve really integrated it into the official D&D experience, and honestly, it’s become the go-to digital tool for playing the game. It’s just amazing how much it’s grown!
D&D Beyond Now Offers Subscriber-Only Character Options
D&D Beyond has launched a new benefit for its paid members called D&D Beyond Drops. It’s a continually expanding collection of content available to those with Hero or Master subscriptions. Each month, D&D Beyond will add more to the library – in May, that included 125 maps, 250 images, 10 stickers, and previously offered subscriber rewards like character sheets and digital accessories. Importantly, D&D Beyond Drops also features new character options, like feats, spells, and backgrounds, which were added for the first time in May.
- Background
- Pact Seeker: “With a purpose in mind, you sought out an extraplanar creature to strike a deal.”
- Feat
- Fey Pact: “Make a pact with an Fey creature and draw upon some of its powers.”
- Fey Sentinel: “Build upon your pact with the Fey by drawing upon more of its power and become a guardian to the natural world.”
- Infernal Pact: “Make a pact with an Infernal creature and draw upon some of its powers.”
- Infernal Bulwark: “Build upon your Infernal pact by channeling corrupt defensive magic to ward off your enemies.”
- Infernal Dragoon: “Wield and harness Infernal might to empower yourself and strike fear into your enemies.”
- Spell
- Astral Flood: “Channel energy from the Astral Sea to unleash a torrent of magic that leaves your foes disoriented or struggling to see.”
- Buzzing Bee: “Summon a noisy spectral bee to buzz around and distract your foes.”
- Insidious Rhythm: “Impose a haunting yet catchy tune on an enemy, making it harder to concentrate.”
- Leomund’s Lamentable Belaborment: “By proclaiming an insightful or inflammatory statement, you force enemies to spend their turn arguing about it.”
- Sticks to Snakes: “Turn nonmagical wood nearby into snakes that you can mentally command.”

D&D Beyond’s Drops content isn’t shareable, even if you have a Master Tier subscription. This is because it’s considered a perk of being a subscriber, meaning each player needs their own subscription to use these new options on D&D Beyond. This makes accessing them cost extra and can be inconvenient when building characters in Dungeons & Dragons.
Adding to the problem, these character options appear more powerful than similar options found in most rulebooks. For instance, the Fey Sentinel, a feature unlocked at 4th level that builds on the Fey Pact, offers more tangible benefits than comparable features in Dungeons & Dragons 5.5e, like Enclave Magic.
-
Fey Sentinel (From D&D Beyond Drops)
- Requires level 4+ and the Fey Pact origin feat.
- Increase Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma by 1.
- Fading Target: Turn invisible as a reaction after a target misses you once per Long Rest.
- Fey Shift: Teleport up to half of one’s speed instead of moving when using the Dash action.
- Nature’s Roots: Learn Entangle and Plant Growth, and can cast each once per day for free.
-
Enclave Magic (From Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerun)
- Requires level 4+ and the Emerald Enclave Fledgling origin feat.
- Increase Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma by 1.
- Friend to Animals: Advantage on ability checks using the Influence action on Beasts.
- Two Hearts, One Mind: Learn Beast Sense, and can cast it once per day for free without Concentration.

D&D Beyond Drops is just getting started! Each month, alongside the weekly pre-made adventures, you can expect fresh content – like the four monsters, five maps, and six new character options arriving in June. Don’t worry about missing out if you subscribe late, as past content will always be available. While fans are eager for more character customization, many are disappointed that these options are only accessible through a subscription and can’t be shared. This limits character-building freedom compared to content previously released in Unearthed Arcana or official sourcebooks. We’ll have to wait and see what else Dungeons & Dragons has in store for D&D Beyond Drops.
