Dungeons and Dragons Reveals Seven New Subclasses for Ravenloft: The Horrors Within

The popular game Dungeons & Dragons has announced the seven new character classes coming in its upcoming horror-themed book, Ravenloft: The Horrors Within, which will be released on June 16th. These classes were originally tested in a preview released in 2025, and are now becoming official options for players, with the exception of the Hexblade Warlock.

Back in May 2025, Dungeons & Dragons released a preview of new character options focused on horror, hinting at a larger book exploring darker themes. That hint became reality when D&D announced its plans for 2026, revealing that the first book would be Ravenloft: The Horrors Within. This new book continues the story from Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft, but is updated to work with the latest D&D rules from 2024.

All Subclasses Coming in D&D’s Ravenloft: The Horrors Within

Dungeons & Dragons has revealed the new character classes coming in its latest update. The update will include updated versions of familiar classes like the Grave Domain Cleric, Shadow Sorcerer, Undead Patron Warlock, College of Spirits Bard, and Phantom Rogue. Plus, two completely new classes are being added: the Reanimator Artificer and the Hollow Warden Ranger.

  • Grave Domain Cleric: Walk the border of life and death, bringing allies back from the brink while ushering foes over the threshold.
  • Shadow Sorcerer: Channel the darkness within, summon Spirits of Ill Omen, and move through shadows.
  • Undead Patron Warlock: Take the Form of Dread to gain some of the patron’s dark powers, and become akin to an undead creature.
  • College of Spirits Bard: Spend Bardic Inspiration to channel Spirits from Beyond to buff allies and harm foes.
  • Phantom Rogue: Become like a ghost, ravage foes with Wails from the Grave, and steal Tokens from the Departed.
  • Reanimator Artificer: Create and control a Reanimated Companion in battle akin to Frankenstein’s monster.
  • Hollow Warden Ranger: Wield the eerie power and hunger of the ancient wilds with a subclass straight out of The Witcher.

So, heads up, if you were hoping to play a Hexblade Warlock in the new Ravenloft: The Horrors Within book, you’re out of luck. They took seven of the eight subclasses from that old Unearthed Arcana document, but the Hexblade didn’t make it. It’s a bummer, since it’s a really popular choice for Warlocks in D&D, but it just won’t be available in this release.

Although not currently available, the Hexblade character class is expected to be included in a future Dungeons & Dragons product. The next sourcebook, Arcana Unleashed, will add new player options and several magic-focused classes, and the Hexblade Warlock was previously featured in a test version released in June 2025. It might appear in Arcana Unleashed with these other classes, or it could be released in the third sourcebook planned for late 2026, which may also include classes focused on apocalyptic or villainous themes that have been playtested.

The official release date for Ravenloft: The Horrors Within is June 16th, but some fans will have early access. D&D Beyond subscribers at the Hero Tier can start reading the digital version on June 9th, and Master Tier subscribers can access it even earlier, on June 2nd. This means players can see how the subclasses have evolved since their initial appearance in the D&D Horror Subclasses UA, before the physical book is released.
