Elden Ring Is 'The Limit' For FromSoftware, Director Says

Highlights

  • Hidetaka Miyazaki believes Elden Ring to be “the limit” of the content scope that FromSoftware can realistically achieve right now.
  • The FromSoftware boss suggested the company’s next projects might be smaller than Elden Ring.
  • Miyazaki also revealed he’s not opposed to the idea of an Elden Ring movie or TV adaptation, although he doesn’t believe FromSoftware has the expertise to tackle such a project.

As a dedicated fan who’s traversed countless dungeons and slain countless beasts across the Soulsborne series, I find Hidetaka Miyazaki’s words about Elden Ring being “the limit” of FromSoftware’s current content scope both intriguing and a tad disheartening.

As a diehard fan, I can’t help but feel exhilarated when I hear Elden Ring is supposedly the pinnacle of content scope achievable by FromSoftware, as shared by its visionary director, Hidetaka Miyazaki. In a recent chat, he dropped this intriguing insight, also hinting at the exciting directions in which FromSoftware might be heading next in the game development world.

As a dedicated gamer, I can attest that while many games boast larger worlds than Elden Ring, the Lands Between remain an expansive realm, stretching across roughly 30.5 square miles (79km²). This makes Elden Ring, the blockbuster hit of 2022, undeniably the grandest creation FromSoftware has ever unleashed upon us gamers. And that’s without factoring in the colossal Shadow of the Erdtree expansion!

FromSoftware Boss Has ‘Concerns’ About Making a Bigger Game Than Elden Ring

In their latest Soulsborne release, Elden Ring, the Japanese studio has pushed the boundaries of content size. However, as stated by Hidetaka Miyazaki, the company’s president and director of Elden Ring, this might be as big as FromSoftware games will get for some time. In a recent interview with The Guardian, he implied that Elden Ring represents the maximum scale the studio is currently capable of, expressing reservations about taking on a project larger than Elden Ring in the near future. Essentially, it appears that FromSoftware is not planning any more massive games in the immediate future.

Elden Ring Developer Might Tackle Multiple Smaller Games Next

In light of the current situation, the director of Elden Ring expressed that it could be sensible for the company to take on several smaller projects next. This aligns with Miyazaki’s long-held desire to provide other FromSoftware team members an opportunity to direct their own games. As a seasoned industry figure, Miyazaki has been granting such chances for some time, as evidenced by Tomohiro Shibuya and Yui Tanimura leading Dark Souls 2 in 2014, and Masaru Yamamura helming Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon in 2023. Similarly, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice in 2019 was jointly directed by Miyazaki, who worked alongside Kazuhiro Hamatani on the project.

Where FromSoftware is right now, in terms of scale, I would say Elden Ring is really the limit.

Miyazaki Is Not Opposed to an Elden Ring Movie Idea

In the same interview, Miyazaki revealed that Shadow of the Erdtree is the final Elden Ring-related project FromSoftware has planned for now. However, he expressed no objection to other creators using the IP. “I don’t see any reason to prevent a new take or adaptation of Elden Ring; like a movie, for instance,” he clarified. Despite this, Miyazaki believes that FromSoftware may not have the necessary skills to handle different forms of media. Interestingly enough, this statement was made just weeks after George R.R. Martin sparked speculation about a potential Elden Ring film or television adaptation.

It appears as though FromSoftware’s upcoming game may not be as expansive as Elden Ring, and could potentially be quite a bit smaller. Despite speculation that the studio is currently engaged in several projects, they have yet to disclose their next project following Shadow of the Erdtree.
