Elon Musk’s WhatsApp warning
Musk pointed out on Twitter that WhatsApp routinely moves a user’s private data nightly, despite some people continuing to think of it as a secure messaging platform.
Expert: Gabor Gurbacs, strategic advisor for Tether and VanEck, expressed skepticism towards Elon Musk’s statements. He pointed out that WhatsApp messages are allegedly encrypted end-to-end. However, a video Musk shared on Twitter seemingly contradicts this, suggesting that WhatsApp activates users’ microphones at night, transmitting the “encrypted” data to the company’s servers.
As a researcher, I’ve discovered that WhatsApp is currently under the ownership of Meta Platforms Inc., led by tech mogul Mark Zuckerberg. However, it’s important to note that there have been concerns raised about Zuckerberg’s past business practices regarding user privacy. Specifically, there are allegations that he has sold private user data to advertisers in the past, which has tarnished his reputation in this area.
A number of other X users, including entrepreneur John Carmack who boasts a million followers, inquired Musk about concrete proof that WhatsApp was leaking users’ private data – namely photos, call logs, text messages, and audio recordings – in the comment section.
Many, however, supported Musk, sharing his concerns.

Rest assured, the data remains confined to your device and doesn’t get transferred to Microsoft databases for privacy reasons.
Elon Musk expressed his criticism toward this new innovation, drawing a comparison to an eerie episode in the acclaimed dystopian film series Black Mirror. Similarly, Ripple‘s CTO and Vitalik Butern raised doubts about the intentions behind the development of this feature, as shared by Microsoft’s CEO.
