The progress of artificial intelligence (AI) has been remarkable, with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and big companies like Apple joining the trend. It seems we are experiencing an AI boom. Yet, it is crucial to remember that “with great power comes great responsibility,” a message emphasized in numerous Spider-Man films.

Worldwide, the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence is predicted to carry substantial risks for people everywhere. As a result, influential figures such as Elon Musk and Vitalik Buterin have been actively speaking out about the necessity of AI regulations to mitigate these global dangers. Musk, who heads an AI company called X.AI Corp., supports the development of this technology while also advocating for industry oversight.

Need for AI regulations

California has proposed a bill, SB 1047, aimed at addressing the potential hazards and risks associated with artificial intelligence. If enacted, this legislation could impose greater accountability on AI model developers who invest over $100 million, requiring them to adhere to certain safety protocols, including testing their models for safety before deployment.

Vitalik Buterin’s concerns

In response to Elon Musk’s tweet, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin discussed the importance of regulating the AI sector. However, he expressed reservations about the effectiveness of these proposed regulations. Buterin pondered whether the SB 1047 bill would be employed to target open-source and pre-trained models intended for further development.
