On August 30, Charles Hoskinson, the creator of Cardano, declared through X that the Genesis Keys, crucial cryptographic keys used during the blockchain’s early development and operation, have been terminated. Hoskinson’s concise yet impactful statement read, “Goodbye Genesis Keys! The Age of Voltaire is coming soon.”
Cardano Enters The Voltaire Era
During the early stages of blockchain creation, The Genesis Keys played a crucial role, helping to initiate its launch and setup. These keys were in the possession of key entities responsible for developing and promoting ADA: Input | Output, the Cardano Foundation, and Emurgo. Their main function was to ensure the security of the initial network and manage its early operations, with a goal to transition towards a more decentralized system as soon as possible.
According to Hoskinson’s recent statement, the Chang hard fork’s initial phase is set to activate on September 1st. This hard fork marks a vital step in ADA‘s governance transformation, transferring substantial power and funds to the community.
Crypto analyst Dan Gambardello remarked via X: “The Cardano Chang hard fork isn’t just another upgrade; it’s an actual turning point in crypto history. Over $600 million will be entirely in the hands of its community, based on today’s ADA price. This could very quickly increase to $5 billion or even $10 billion. This is a paradigm shift in how we perceive blockchain governance.”
Gambardello went on to clarify that with this governance structure, the project stands ready to reshape its place within the blockchain system, possibly drawing in more developers, users, and investors. He hinted that despite being underestimated by many, Cardano has proven itself as a top-tier cryptocurrency.
Lloyd Duhon from GM Cardano has explained the workings of the recently established Constitutional Committee in a YouTube episode titled “Governance Matters”. As per Duhon, this committee is now complete and prepared to make sure that all on-chain governance activities correspond with the temporary constitution.

The committee is made up of individuals appointed by key organizations such as IOG, the foundation, and Emurgo, along with representatives elected from various regional councils including the Cardano Atlantic Council, Cardano Japan, and the Eastern Cardano Council, who were chosen by the community.
The responsibilities of the committee are outlined in Article Six of the temporary Constitution. This means that the committee can only vote on whether proposed governance actions are constitutional after they have been put into action on the blockchain. This helps to ensure a strict system of checks and balances is maintained.
Duhon underscored the significance of openness in this procedure, pointing out that every decision should be openly recorded, and reasons given when proposals are not passed, particularly highlighting potential conflicts with the constitution.
Following the Chang hard fork, the community’s influence becomes pivotal for ADA‘s prosperity. Global workshops have been arranged to draft the conclusive Constitution, with the first sessions commencing in August and leading up to a Constitutional Convention in Buenos Aires in December.
