The following article contains spoilers for Naruto and Boruto.
It’s likely that the anime series “Naruto” ranks high among those published by Shonen Jump for its exceptional world-building, offering a rich tapestry of possibilities and consistency. Kishimoto demonstrates a remarkable skill in setting rules, adhering to them, and expanding the Naruto universe within the limits he defined.
In the world of Naruto, Masashi Kishimoto initially presented the Uchiha clan and its heartbreaking history, alongside the Sharingan – a unique eye technique. Later on in Boruto, we encounter Sarada Uchiha, an Uchiha who possesses the Sharingan but requires glasses to see clearly. Some viewers have raised questions about this, suggesting it’s illogical, but is there any validity to the concern that Sarada wears glasses?
Uchiha’s Great Eyesight Is Partly A Myth
In the narrative, Sarada Uchiha has been wearing glasses since her debut, and this detail about her quickly piqued fans’ curiosity. Since the Uchiha clan is famously associated with abilities allowing some of its members to activate the Sharingan eye technique, spectators often assume they have exceptional vision. However, it’s important to note that while the Sharingan is an extraordinary ability, it wasn’t explicitly confirmed in the series that Uchiha clan members possess the best eyesight overall.
Those Sharingan… How much can you actually see?
— Itachi Uchiha
To clarify, while both the Sharingan and Byakugan offer enhanced vision, the Sharingan’s power primarily lies in its ability to manipulate perception through genjutsu and increased strength, whereas the Byakugan significantly boosts the user’s sight. Although the Sharingan does provide some degree of visual enhancement, it is not as extensive as that offered by the Byakugan. Consequently, when activated, members of the Hyuga clan would possess the superior vision in the series due to their Byakugan ability. It’s essential to note that neither the Sharingan nor the Byakugan affect a user’s vision when not active; their abilities are solely related to the jutsu they can perform. If a shinobi inherits the appropriate genetic traits, they can utilize these techniques regardless of their usual eyesight quality.
Sarada Uchiha Had An Illness When She Was a Kid
From my perspective as a fan, it’s intriguing to ponder if the genes that unlock the Sharingan might be associated with exceptional vision right from birth. While this isn’t necessarily the case, it seems plausible considering the Sharingan’s connection to sight. Unfortunately, we don’t have much insight into why only some Uchiha can manifest the Sharingan, while others cannot.
The series suggests that the Sharingan is linked to trauma, but not every Uchiha who experiences trauma will be able to activate it. We know from the storyline that there are likely genetic mutations associated with the Sharingan, yet not all members of the Uchiha clan will receive these mutations.
Sarada has worn glasses since childhood due to a high fever and an unidentified illness, which may have caused permanent damage to her eyesight. While it’s uncommon, certain infections can result in such vision problems. The anime didn’t specify the exact disease she had. Later, she started using glasses that once belonged to Karin Uzumaki. So, Sarada didn’t inherit poor vision from birth (even if it were acceptable), but rather developed it due to her past illness.
The Sharingan Enhances Sarada’s Vision
As an observer, I had anticipated that, given the Sharingan’s ability to enhance vision, Sarada might choose to remove her glasses when activating it, similar to Itachi Uchiha who kept his Sharingan active due to his vision problems. However, this is not what we see in the series, suggesting a possible connection between Sarada’s glasses and the cause of her impaired vision. Despite the potential benefits of the Sharingan for her eyesight, it might be too costly in terms of chakra to keep it continuously activated, especially given that her glasses function effectively for her daily needs.
What Could Happen If Sarada Overused The Mangekyo Sharingan?
Sarada has demonstrated her proficiency in wielding the Mangekyo Sharingan, having recently displayed an incredibly potent technique known as Ohirume. However, excessive usage of this eye-power can lead to blindness. Considering Sarada’s eyesight is currently less than perfect, it’s possible that she may experience a faster decline in vision compared to Uchihas with better sight, which could introduce an intriguing twist to the narrative.
