As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but shiver at the bone-chilling teaser trailer HBO has unleashed for IT: Welcome to Derry. For ardent Stephen King fans like myself, this tantalizing glimpse offers a foreboding taste of the terrors that lie ahead, along with a tantalizing sneak peek at Bill Skarsgård’s menacing portrayal of Pennywise. The chilling return to Derry promises yet another harrowing tale set in the sinister town of Derry, Maine, where children are subjected to traumas and gruesome murders at the hands of the malevolent and calculating Pennywise the Clown. Set in 1962, this upcoming series serves as a prequel to Andy Muschietti’s IT films, diving deeper into the intricate “It” universe.
In the two IT movies, Bill Skarsgård portrayed the terrifying clown Pennywise who tormented a group of kids in Derry during 1988 and later when they were adults in 2016, much like Stephen King’s novel depicts. The upcoming show ‘Welcome to Derry’ will delve into another instance when the evil clown wreaked havoc, set in 1962 – a time period that precedes the one featured in the initial IT film. The HBO series stars Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, Taylour Paige, and James Remar, with Skarsgard returning as Pennywise and also serving as an executive producer.
Pennywise the Clown Is Back in New IT Welcome to Derry Teaser Trailer

In a short time after suggesting an upcoming full trailer on social media with a brief teaser, HBO Max unveiled a chilling sneak peek of IT: Welcome to Derry. The formal trailer starts with a boy searching for a ride in a cold, dark, snowy road, who eventually gets picked up by a car. Inside the vehicle, the couple asks where he lives so they can return him home, but the shivering child answers, “Anywhere except Derry,” foreshadowing its ominous plot involving Pennywise the clown.
Viewers will witness a family in Maine conversing about lost children, followed by a sequence of a young boy angling in a lake, only for a spine-tingling moment where he appears to be dragged underwater by a menacing clown. The terror doesn’t let up as a policeman is shown perspiring heavily and wearing a malevolent grin while knocking on a door, followed swiftly by a child peering into a bathroom sink from which the evil cackle of Pennywise emanates. As the chilling trailer concludes, a fleeting image of Pennywise materializes as he stalks through a sewer tunnel, emerging from the darkness.
Previously, Skarsgård expressed his reluctance to participate in “Welcome to Derry,” stating he’d finished with his Pennywise character unless he discovered the Muschiettis were on board. However, upon agreeing to reprise his role, he also joined the series as an executive producer. Skarsgård shared that they would delve into unexplored aspects of Pennywise, and he was eager for fans to witness what unfolds in the series.
IT: Welcome to Derry is set to debut this fall on HBO Max.
