As a researcher with a keen interest in blockchain technology and its influential figures, I find Vitalik Buterin’s commitment to supporting various projects and charitable causes truly inspiring. His dedication to the Ethereum ecosystem and broader philanthropic endeavors is commendable, especially considering his significant influence as one of the platform’s co-founders.
In a recent tweet, Ethereum’s co-founder Vitalik Buterin gave a clear explanation about his ETH holdings. Contrary to speculation and rumors, Buterin confirmed that he hasn’t sold any ETH for personal profit since 2018. Instead, the money from any sales has been invested in various projects that he considers worthwhile, not only within the Ethereum community but also in broader philanthropic efforts.
Since 2018, I haven’t cashed out any sale earnings; instead, I’ve used them to fund diverse initiatives. These projects span across the Ethereum network as well as charitable causes, such as biomedical research and development.

In a statement addressing rumors about him cashing out ETH for gains, Buterin clarified that he hasn’t sold any ETH since 2018 and instead, the sales made were to finance projects he found valuable within the Ethereum community or for charitable purposes, such as biomedical research and development.
Following a similar vein, Wu blockchain referenced a statement attributed to Ethereum‘s creator on Warpcast: “When you come across an article stating that Vitalik transferred XXX ETH to an exchange, it usually isn’t me selling; instead, I’m likely donating to a charity, non-profit, or another project. The recipient is typically the one selling due to operational costs. Since 2018, I haven’t personally profited from selling ETH.”
Vitalik Buterin’s ETH holdings
3 years ago, the Ethereum blockchain was mentioned in a comment by Buterin on Reddit. In this comment, he clarified that the Ether (ETH) he possessed originated from the premine, and he had approximately 700,000 ETH from this source.
As a crypto investor, I’ve come across the intriguing fact that approximately 10% of the total Ethereum supply, which amounts to around 12 million Ether, was mined at inception and reserved for early contributors to the Ethereum project and the Ethereum Foundation (EF). This non-profit organization is tasked with managing the development of Ethereum. Among these early contributors is Vitalik Buterin, a co-creator of Ethereum, who received his Ether stash as remuneration for his invaluable contributions to the project.
As per data from blockchain sources, Ethereum’s creator, Vitalik Buterin, is estimated to possess approximately 240,000 ETH at present. This is a significant decrease of around 423,000 ETH compared to his original holdings.
3 years ago, according to Lookonchain, Ethereum creator Vitalik Buterin held approximately 325,000 ETH, valued at around $1.46 billion when the price of ETH was $4,500. However, data suggests that as of now, his holdings have decreased by about 85,000 ETH, or roughly $209 million worth of Ethereum. This reduction in ETH holdings is based on the current price of Ethereum at approximately $4,500, reflecting a total of 240,000 ETH now held by Buterin.
