Ethereum Electra Upgrade: Here Are The 4 Code Changes Embedded

The next consensus layer-focused hardfork coming to Ethereum is the Electra upgrade and developers have been busy reinforcing the upgrade with certain EIPs that offer specific functions. The 4 key EIPs were teased by Galaxy Researcher Christine Kim.

Ethereum Electra Upgrade Sees Multiple Implementation

The Ethereum Electra protocol is set to be activated on the testnet imminently, according to recent discussions at the latest All Core Developers Consensus (ACDC) meeting led by Ethereum Foundation researcher Alex Stokes. During this gathering, Ethereum developers have planned to incorporate EIP 6110, EIP 7002, EIP 7251, and EIP 7549 into the Electra update.

Here are four modifications currently being incorporated into Electra:

EIP 6110, proposed as early as December 2022, will facilitate on-chain handling of validator deposits instead of the current proposer voting mechanism, as stated by the Ethereum Foundation.

Over time, EIP 6110 will enhance Ethereum’s security and reliability by altering how the network manages validator deposits.

EIP 7002 is another term for the Exit Through Execution Layer, which enables validators to initiate exits using their execution layer withdrawal credentials (0x01). Developers may need to make slight modifications to this EIP to trigger corresponding changes in the Engine API.

EIP-7251 can be described as follows: This Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) is labeled “Boost MAX_EFFECTIVE_BALANCE.” Its purpose is to enable validators to have larger effective balances while keeping the minimum effective balance at 32 ETH. It’s important to mention that EIP-7002 must be implemented first for EIP-7251 to take effect. There are predictions that implementing both EIPs in a single upgrade could lead to intricate complexities.

Developer’s Concern Highlighted

Regarding EIP 7251, ethDreamer from Lighthouse raised two queries that require consideration before implementation. The first query revolves around whether or not it will incorporate custom thresholds for partial withdrawals for validators holding more than 32 ETH in effective balance.

Additionally, there’s a question about allowing validator consolidation as a proposal initiated by the EF (Ethereum Foundation) or EthMagic (ETHMagic) team to be discussed in the upcoming Ethereum developers’ meeting.

The EIP 7549 proposal shifts the location of the committee index from within the signed Attestation message to an external position. This is a relatively new Ethereum Improvement Proposal.

“This proposition intends to enhance the efficiency of Casper FFG clients by lessening the typical number of comparisons required for verifying consensus guidelines. Although this Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) will positively influence all types of clients, those utilizing Zero-Knowledge circuits to prove Casper FFG consensus are anticipated to experience the most significant improvements.”

The Ethereum blockchain is experiencing significant changes, with the Electra Upgrade being the upcoming significant update following the Dencun Upgrade, which was activated on the mainnet earlier in 2023.
