Every 10/10 Open-World Game Of The Last 10 Years

Open-world games are often considered the best the gaming world has to offer, frequently winning awards and setting a high standard for quality. Over the past ten years, many amazing games in this style have been released, offering players incredibly detailed and immersive worlds to explore and enjoy.

It’s rare for a game to excel in every way, but some truly stand out. These games offer compelling stories, enjoyable gameplay, and, most importantly, capture the magic that makes open-world games so popular with players everywhere.

Fit the 9 games into the grid.

The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild & Tears Of The Kingdom

Reshaping The Entire Genre

  • Unguided exploration coupled with immense freedom.
  • Sequel with a familiar yet distinctive experience.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild revolutionized open-world games by moving away from typical map markers and instead encouraging players to explore based on what they discovered in the environment and how things interacted. The game’s realistic physics meant players felt like they were creating their own solutions, not just following a set path. Tears of the Kingdom builds on this idea even further, adding a complex building system and a world that emphasizes height, all while staying true to the spirit of the original game.

As a huge fan, I think these two games completely changed what open-world games could be. They really focused on what I wanted as a player, instead of just filling the world with stuff. It wasn’t about ticking boxes on a map; it was about actually discovering things that felt important and connected. That’s why these worlds feel so alive and so fun to explore – they’re truly some of the most impactful open-world games we’ve seen in years!

Elden Ring

The New King Of The Gaming World

  • Soulslike gameplay on a massive scale.
  • Incredible set pieces and world design.

Okay, so I’ve been playing Elden Ring, and honestly, it’s just on another level when it comes to open-world games. From the very start, you can tell this is going to be an experience you won’t forget. It doesn’t take long to realize just how massive and packed the world is – seriously, there are bosses everywhere, tons of secret spots, and enough backstory and lore to fill an entire library. You’re not going to learn it all in one playthrough, that’s for sure!

After you finish the main game, a large expansion is waiting with new weapons and lots of enemies to test them on. Elden Ring was a daring move to make soulslike games open and expansive, and the final result proves it was a huge success.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Realism On Another Level

  • Huge dedication to authenticity.
  • An emotional story that has been hailed as the best in the industry.

Red Dead Redemption 2 creates an incredibly realistic and immersive virtual world, making players feel like they’ve truly stepped back in time. The game’s attention to detail – from how animals behave to the daily lives of characters – is unmatched. Its slower pace encourages players to really connect with and explore this detailed world.

Beyond all of that, the story itself is truly amazing. The acting is fantastic, and the writing is exceptional – it’s easily one of the best stories ever told in a video game. The emotional impact and how engrossing it is are hard to put into words, but it’s clear Rockstar Games knows how to create a groundbreaking open-world experience.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Web-Swings Never Looked So Good

  • Dual protagonists with distinct tools.
  • Satisfying traversal throughout the whole game.

As a huge fan, I can tell you that one of the best things about Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is how amazing it feels to move around. Swinging through New York City is so smooth and natural, it really makes you feel like Spider-Man. It’s not just about getting from point A to point B – exploring the city is actually fun and feels completely connected to everything you’re doing in the game. The world doesn’t feel like a pretty background; it feels like another tool in your Spider-Man arsenal!

Just like a great superhero story, the game is full of exciting action, but it’s also carefully paced. Every choice you make as a player feels important, no matter where you are in the game. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is a grand and spectacular experience, beautifully refined, and truly lets you live out the dream of being Spider-Man – something fans have wanted for years.

Death Stranding 2

Subverting All Expectations

  • More cohesive narrative than the original.
  • A grander world with more extravagant visuals.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach builds upon the unique gameplay of the first game, making it more interactive and responsive while keeping the same intriguing and unsettling atmosphere. Like before, getting around the challenging landscapes is key, but players now have new tools to help them overcome obstacles and reach their goals.

Honestly, ‘abstract’ still feels like the best way to describe this series, but this time around, the story is so much easier to follow. And it really gets its darker points across clearly and well. What I love is that Death Stranding 2 doesn’t try to be anything it’s not – it completely does its own thing. It’s really pushed boundaries and created an open-world experience that’s stuck with me even after finishing the game. It’s just breathtaking.

Outer Wilds

Far From Your Average Adventure

  • Puzzles and knowledge are at the centre of progress.
  • Gradual unraveling of the mystery.

Outer Wilds is a unique open-world game that focuses on natural discovery, rather than typical gameplay elements. It features a time loop, but intentionally avoids giving players direct answers, encouraging them to slowly piece together the story and uncover the truth on their own.

When pieces of information finally click into place, the feeling of satisfaction is incredibly rewarding. This progress isn’t achieved by just following instructions; it’s all thanks to the player’s own thinking. More than anything, Outer Wilds demonstrated that games don’t need to be huge to be deeply moving. By giving players freedom to explore and discover the story themselves, it proved that a smaller, more thoughtful experience can be just as powerful – or even more so – than a typical blockbuster.
